Hi Guys.
Just brought the horses in and Outrageous has a massively swollen eye and can only open it partially.
It was runny and *slightly* puffy about 3 hours ago, but didn't think too much off it as he and Boozle have been having hayfever type symptoms the past week.
The vet is on the way out but will be about an hour, anything I should be doing in the mean time?

Photo not great, and only one as he really hated the flash and the ones without the flash aren't visible.

Daughters pony came in like this yesterday..it was the flies. She looked like she'd done 10 rounds with Mike Tyson. I put her fly veil on yesterday evening after sponging her eyes with cool water and today she's fine.. Hope yours is something as simple...it does look very similar

looks to me like he's either banged it or the flies are irritating as per honeypots. Vet will probably give you a little tube of cream to squirt in eye. Just keep him out of bright light and away from flies.

Hi, My boy came in like this last weekend, his eye was so swollen it was just a slit.....I proceeded to have a hissy fit then calmed down and bathed it, couldnt see anything in it...flies had been bad that day and he had itched his face mask off......so on my OH insistance that I bathe it and leave it til the morning I worried all night only to get to my yard and find most of the swelling had gone, no weeping nothing....looked like a fly bite or sting, so maybe one got into his mask, I havent put it back on since..I bathed it for a couple of days and he has been fine. Hope your chap is ok too.

I had this prob last week called the vet as soon as, and he gave my horse 2 jabs and eye cream to put in her eye 3 times a day, we went stright to the tack shop and brought all the horse's full fly masks and now the problem has gone away "thank god". Vet says it's the flys as they carry all sorts of germs and then go from one horse to another.

Thanks everyone!
Have updated the post in the Vet section, but the long and the short of it is that it's perfect again this morning

. Normally a swollen eye wouldn't worry me, but poor Rage really did look awful - the sheer size of it didn't come out on the camera, it was a proper shiner!

He normally wears a fly mask, but didn't yesterday because we had heavy downpours on and off all day, but today he'll be wearing it no matter what the weather!

My mare had conjunctivis a couple of weeks back and her eye was slightly swollen and I was recommended to use Brolene Eye ointment (which is for humans). You can buy it from Boot for about £4.50. It cleared up within three days!
