Sorry if this doesn't really fit in here but I'm a bit stuck. A kitten has just been thrown into the foyer of my work at closing time. I've taken it home and planned to go to the supermarket on the way home but because it's so late they are all shut (even the 24 hr one which I just don't get) so what should I give it etc. Didn't know if I should ring the RSPCA as it said it was an emergency cruelty line.

Please help, I've never had cats before but was the only one that could take it!

boiled chicken and rice or fish and rice. mashed up or even whiz it in a liquidiser for a few secs. this is what i had to feed my kitten on, as he'd been weaned on totally inappropriate food and his digestive system was shot. he almost died at one point and the vet cudnt do anything. so i tried him on this and within a couple of days he turned the corner. 3 yrs on, he's whopping great 5 kg cat! if u keep it, be very careful about introducing new food, they are so sensitive. good luck x

In a kitten feeding emergency, pretty much any kind of meat/fish you can get it to take will be better than nothing. Make sure it is in very tiny pieces, as at 8 weeks it is not likely to be very used to eating solids (although probably has been weaned) and so could choke on big pieces. The smaller the better.

Dont feed anything with bones in (including boney fish) as they can easily choke on them.
Also if you can then try to avoid processed meats (ham etc.) as they contain too much salt which is bad for them. Is better than nothing though if its all you have tonight.

In a pinch, milk or yoghurt would also be better than nothing, although it can upset their digestive systems so I would only use this if meat isnt an option.

Make it a bed with an old fleece or blanket somewhere warm in the house.
I would put newspaper around its bed, and if you have some kind of tray lying around ( or otherwise a cereal box or similar with one flat side cut off and the top taped on so it looks like a litter tray) and fill with shredded paper for tonight, as it could be that he has been taught to use a litter tray by his mother and will be more comfortable going in one.

Also feel free to call the RSPCA emergency line if its late and you think you need to talk to someone about something. Most of their staff should be happy to help you out in this situation even if its not strictly what the line is for.

ETA also make sure it has water available at all times (shallow bowl so it can comfortably get its nose in).

TBH I'd get the little guy to the vet tomorrow for a once over anyway but in the meantime offer boiled white fish or chicken, mixed with a little boiled rice, give water to drink not milk.

Many 'kitten' foods are very rich and will give it the runs, milk can also cause it and they can go downhill very quickly.

Thanks to everyone who has replied, I really do appreciate it as does Blackpool (temporary name) The heating is on, there is a hot water bottle under the container I have housed it in. There's a fluffy towel to snuggle into and another one over the top of the plastic container to hopefully keep it calmer. I have been busy defrosting some chicken then cooking and boiling some rice to make a thick soup like affair. Have also added a little water bowl and a tray with shredded newspaper.

Is there anything else I need to do?

Actually thinking about it I need to feed myself, long time since dinner.

We unfortunately won't be able to keep it (OH is allergic) but even at this time of night I've been facebooking and someone I know lost their old cat earlier this week so there's a chance of a home there (on a lovely farm) if not I will go along to the Cat's protection league as the RSPCA is shut on wednesdays?!?!?!? (note to self, no animal emergencies on a tuesday again)

So thanks again, will let you know what happens xx

How is the little fella, Wimbles? He's a lucky chap to have been 'thrown' at someone like you. Can't you rehome the OH, if he's allergic? ;)

Blackpool made it through a night under my care despite at one point getting lost in the washing machine........ oops!

Is currently having a little more chicken and rice whilst playing with shoes and apron strings.

It's been a busy morning but it looks like I've found Kitty a lovely home with someone who lost their very old cat on Monday. Funny how things work out.

Had wondered about rehoming OH but thought the kitten had a much better chance of someone wanting it!

Have taken a couple of pics for you of the black kitten with beautiful blue eyes

If you hadn't got a home, I would have loved to have that little one and been on way to collect. Looks so much like our beloved Fuzz Nuts who died last November and is still sadly missed.

Thank god the poor little thing has been lucky to find someone to take care of them.

So pleased Kitty is off to a good home.

You really have to wonder about the type of person who chucks away a defenseless little kitten like that.

Was lucky you were around to lavish with TLC :)

Aww glad you found him somewhere to go. We had to have our old stable cat PTS yesterday as he was found paralysed in the morning (vet thinks blood clot) it was/is very sad as we'd had him 14 years but we now are on the hunt for 2 more cats to help keep the rat numbers under control! CPL at the weekend me thinks!!

Aww, isn't he just gorgeous! And thanks to you, his luck has taken a huge turn for the better. I'm pleased too that you have found him a home, otherwise I would have been fighting off Theresa F, Rach and everyone else for him!
