This is just for my curiosity. Mine are all vaccinated but living in a very rural area and lots of ponies being owned by farmers they don't tend to be vaccinated.
I have always vacinated for tetanus. It is only in the last 6 years that I have vaccinated for flu. Simply because for many years I rented my own paddocks and my horses rarely came into contact with others. Since moving to a livery yard though they are fully vaccinated.
We're very rural too but my foals start their course as soon as possible; it's stupidity to not do it as far as I am concerned. It's also far cheaper than not and having to try and treat something or even lose it with tetanus as a neighbour did last year.
My own personal horses are but the school horses and ponies are not. If they get a serious cut we call the vet and get a tetanus jab. We haven't(touchwood) ever had a problem with this.
PF is vaccinated for flu, strangles, equine viral encephalomyelitis (sp?) thingy- I think that's what it's called, and tetanus...
I think that's it. Also she has a coggins test every 2 months to test against EIA- this is compulsory for competing horses and in fact all horses that travel anywhere.
only for tet as she is 14 and her owner has only ever had tet done - i read somewhere that it wasnt good to have 1st flu jab on older horse - so just tetanus it is x
i think not vaccinating for tetanus is fairly dim to put it mildly - it doesn't cost much and tetanus kills and i've seen cases of it and it's not nice. flu is completely otpional depending on your circumstances.
would be having a panic attack everyday if not for tetnus he comes in nerly everyday with a different, lump/scratch/cut
got a very accidnet prone neddy lol
All of mine are done-tet/flu and rhinop. Oh is a transporter and comes into contact with unknown neds and could bring home who knows what so I prefer to be covered. Also have to do the Coggins test once a year. M.
Definately. Flu & Tet for all mine. I think its crazy those who dont even vacc for tetanus, a horse near me contracted it and died a horrid horrid death.
All mine are. Obviously tetanus, but like Tia, I have them vaccinated for Rabies and WNV too.
Strangles is a common vaccination here too, the Vet did offer it but as we don't go out and about we decided it wasn't absolutely necessary.
The dogs have Rabies vaccinations too.
Have to agree with Star, vaccinating for tetanus is an essential, vaccinating for flu or herpes depends on your circumstances. My horse is vaccinated for tetanus and flu but not for herpes or strangles. Tetanus is a bacteria which is abundant in soil and horses have a particular sensitivity to it. Its a killer disease and not a pleasant way to go.
