I have heard that if you smother vaseline on the inside of your horse's hoofs then you can ride as the snow does not stick inside the hoof. Has any tried it? Anyone riding in the snow?

I tried vaseline the other week but it wasn't effective, the other day someone on here suggested putting old socks over the hooves, I popped vaseline on the hooves, followed by a sock over the hoof and then wrapped around the top with some vet wrap, worked an absolute treat :)

I've been putting Effol into my mares feet. Not once when I've walked her back into the yard and it balled up, so I think it's working well.

silicone spray works quite well .. if your horse tolerates spray! i like the idea of the old socks though!!! but i am not that desperate to ride in this......

Vaseline works well but remember to smear it round the inside edge of the shoe as well - went for a hack this morning no problems :D

Make your own stuff

1 kg lard
1 litre of veg oil

warm and melt together - allow to 'set'

smear as much as you want

Works a treat NOT TOXIC for your horses hooves either and kind to your hands!

Cheap too
