We are moving back to the UK from France, in the New Year. My beloved 13 year old gypsy cob has chronic COPD, no known cause, treatment resistant. He has just been on his holidays, out in the open, but suffered severe symptoms for 10 days out of 14, despite ventipulmin, and his oils. ? He has had many vet visits for COPD

I am so worried about his health, he's heaving again today. There's no way I can put him on a lorry for 30 hours to the UK, and rehoming is impossible. SO, I am coming to the terrible, gut wrenching possibility of euthanasia. He can't go on like this. Today I had to hose thick crusted sweat of his whole body, from heaving. No denying hes getting much worse ?
Help!

I'm sorry to see this and 13 isn't very old but all you can do is to make sure that he suffers as little as possible. Tbh, I would be looking at pts without the prospect of a long journey. We had an Appaloosa mare who had steroids for COPD, has your vet prescribed those?

Yes hes had cortisone, and ten days of steroids. Plus many days of ventipulmin

You have managed to give him a longer quality of life than most people would have been able to, with your knowledge (my friends horse is still stable, thanks to you), but it is distressing for you both.
You will do what is right as a loving, caring owner, however painful it is.
It is good that the vet is visiting tomorrow as they will advise you honestly, and sometimes that is what you need to hear, an unbiased opinion.
Sending hugs across the water.

I am so sorry you are facing this incredibly difficult situation ?

Every time you post about your beloved Shy, the love you have for him shines through. You know him better than anyone else, and I know that you will make the right decision for him.

He is so lucky to have you, and whilst I can't offer any practical advice, I can send you lots of virtual hugs. X

I'm so sorry that you're facing this. Shy's obviously an adored horse who has been immaculately cared for and about.
I hope that the vet's visit today will give you the information that you need to make the best informed decision for your lovely horse.

So sorry to hear this but I do think it might be time to call it a day, regardless. I had a pony who had breathing issues and I sadly had to let her go when she was 10. She was my whole universe and it broke my heart, but seeing her struggle was awful. I tried to put myself in her position and imagine the day to day stress of struggling to breathe.
Thinking of you.

I had to do the same for my littlest pony this time last year, something triggered a bad attack and his respiration rate hit around 100 breaths per minute. We managed to ease the attack but the damage was done so we said goodbye as he wasn’t able to do more than walk slowly. I know how tough it is but I felt a lot of peace afterwards knowing I had done the right thing. Big hugs to you.
