So my so called 'nutjob' horse stood to be clipped tonight like an absolute donkey! Only had to put the twitch on to do her ears as she didnt like that but she quite enjoyed it! Shes all cosy with her rugs, but do i NEED to wear an excercise rug and what kind is best, she is fully clipped but still has her legs on.
 
Animals are always ready to surprise us aren't they? You think, my nutty horse is bound to make a fuss about THIS and get ready for the fireworks... and they loook at us and say, "What....?"

I tend not to use an exercise rug unless its raining or very cold but Ron is such a warm horse!

He was standing in his stable sweating yesterday - he's unclipped and very woolly! I have no intention of clipping him for another 2 weeks as I can't be bothered to do all the rug changing for longer than necessary! :)
 
I only use an exercise rug once the weather turns bitter, I ride early before work or late evening so in the middle of winter can be close to freezing. I just pop it on to warm up or if I am going for a road hack.
 
My TB is hunter clipped and will have an exercise sheet on when the weather drops colder, I use a fleece one if it's really cold or a waterproof one if it's raining. Last winter during the worse of the weather I was having to use 2 fleece ones on him at once (that was when riding in snow though!)!!

I find the wrap around ones are best as they don't pull down on the withers and can be taken on and off without having to remove the saddle.
 
I have only ever used them when raining. As long as you warm up propperly and don't let the back get cold between having the rug off and saddle on, Its fine. I got a wrap around one as thought would keep my legs dry too, but they seem to slip horribly so I ended up using it like a normal one
