Took my baby horse to his first ridden competition - 'green horse' prelim test. We scored 67% and if I'd been more acurate in the test it could well have been a point or 2 higher. Not to worry, I was very pleased with him

Now the bit that annoyed me was that it was a green horse class, for neds that have not won a prelim or been placed in a Novice test. I know there were people riding horses in that class that are not 'green'. The horse that won is 14 years old and is shown at county level. I supposed technically it might not have won a dressage test before, but its an experienced mare. Why not be honourable and compete in the 'open' prelim class and leave the green class to the babies.

I was assumed to see the awful woman who was thrown off our yard after only a week for being, well quite frankly, a complete cow, was last. Dispite the fact that she made such a big thing about how good she was and that her looney horse had competed in Burleghy Young Event Horses classes, blah blah. There is a god after all.

Well done on your first outing.

Perhaps the show horse is having a change of direction - and if it has not been placed in novice or prelim, then why shouldn't it complete??

Guess it all depends on the exact definition of "green" horse. If there are no age restrictions then I guess a 14 year old could compete.

At least there are beginners classes now! When I was still battling with my wildthing pony I was straight in with the types who could easily have affiliated!

One always hopes that people will move on to the next class but unfortunately organisers have to rely on the sportsmanship of their competitors as otherwise they'd have to frame the rules so tightly they'd probably not get any entries!

Can I be nosy and ask where you were? Noticed you are in Cheshire like me!

Well done kauto, a respectable score. I agree with you, if there was an alternative open class then a county show horse should have been in that. Pot hunting!

Maybe the show horse had never seen boards before or been to an indoor show.

If it was technically elligable then you have no complaint.

I know what you mean though, it is frustrating to see people/horses competing below their level and smacks of trophy hunting.

I'm nr Warrington.
Thanks, very plsd with little horse, who showed a lot of maturity and if I'd ridden with a little more accuracy we would have gained a few more marks.

I don't really mean to complain and I know the girl on the winning horse so I am pleased she went well. And of course, with no age restriction, she is allowed to compete.
But.... at County Level, it should already be working at a higher level than a basic prelim test and I know its seen boards and been indoors, so I think what I am trying to say, badly perhaps, is that in her position, I would have not ridden in the baby class, even if I could.

I suppose thats folk for you and all you can do is concentrate on your own horse and work on improving yourself. And hope that other people play fair.

I am delighted to get a good score and the judge wrote "a very attractive little horse with some pleasing work shown - some unsteadiness to contact occasionally spoiling the picture - when he settles will do a very smart test".

At our RC Annual Show there is always one member who enters equitation classes, as she does at all the local shows in the area and wins, open and 'mature rider'. Many people complain because she shows her Welsh Cob at county level and people often say she is 'pothunting'. However I watched her this year at GYS and she was so far down the line, she could hardly say the horse is 'county standard'. There was a huge entry and about half were asked to leave the ring before the final judging took place, she was one of those! I reckon she enters all those local shows in order to console herself that neither she nor the horse are really likely to do much at county shows.
