Very pleasing and satisfying result!

Interesting!

Over 100 views, yet only 1 post.

Strange for a forum of people who proclaim to be so 'welfare minded'.

Would have thought there were lots of people on here who were extremely pleased that this man has been brought to justice.

..Was my old farrier for 8 years before I moved out of Cheshire...
Been out of area for about 7 months now, didnt know any of this was going on.

I hope people around Cheshire will be aware of this man and steer clear.

Besides the part about being involved in cockfighting (I presume that removing the wattles on x number of his cockerels, also have something to do with the cockfighting), I think it sounds like yet another animal hoarder who ends up wanting to have more exotic animals (= wild bird kept in captivity without permission), and having more animals than they can take proper care of, which in turn, as I understand it, partly led to him being convicted of animal cruelty.

Adding that he was convicted of possessing three shotguns and ammunition without a licence, by the same court last year, doesn't exactly improve my impression of the situation.

About the cockfighting, I feel that people who likes that, should take up Mixed martial arts themselves and leave the cockerels at home, and people simply shouldn't have more animals than they can take proper care of, however, I didn't see anything about that he's actually been proven to be bad at his job as a farrier, so I'm not sure if I think that it is correct to make him (what I presume) permanently banned by the Farriers Registration Council.

Only because he's proven that he takes on more birds and ferrets than he can handle in private, have bad taste when it comes to hobbies etc., I'm not sure how that correlates, to that he no longer should be allowed to go near horses hooves as a registered farrier.

Sadly, if he is an animal hoarder, regardless of what the sentence said, he will probably try to get new birds...

He doesn't sound like an animal hoarder to me.

'Professional' cockfighters (for want of a better word) do not have any regard to animal welfare, they do not 'hoard' animals through mental illness. They keep and breed numerous cockerels and train them up for fighting. The standard of general care these cockerels (and hens) get are not at the forefront of these peoples' minds provided they get a decent fighting cockerel who will do the job.

Cockfighting, as dog fighting, is usually linked to serious underworld crime, and is not remotely on the same level as a person who suffers a mental illness and cannot control their hoarding tendencies. It is calculated, carefully and very closely controlled, and the people involved in such circles are quite often serious criminals.

Yes the wattles are removed for the purpose of fighting. This is mutilation, and causes terrible suffering. Again, this is not a case of someone who merely 'cannot look after the amount of animals he has because he has acquired too many'. This is intentional, calculated cruelty inflicted for a person's own gain in a vile and barbaric blood sport.

I most certainly wouldn't let him near my horse's feet that's for sure.

ETA - 'bad taste in hobbies'??!!!! Seriously?!! The guy didn't play dominoes or collect stamps for crying out loud - he was involved in cockfighting!

^^^ This!

Moomin1, I know that there often is a link between cockfighting and serious underworld crime, even though I don't remember having heard about them removing the wattles, my personal view about the actual cockfighting is that it is dreadful. However, I don't know that much more about it, I maybe vaguely thought that in general the individuals involved had a few cockerels each and some hens to produce new cockerels, so when I read that he had a wild bird = a goldfinch + "three ferrets, 59 cockerels, 39 hens and 22 chicks", then my first thought is animal hoarder. But as said, I don't know that much about it.

You're not giving me any options to how you would have liked me to express myself, having checked my Swedish - English dictionary, it suggests that I can use bad, poor, inferior, rotten or weak, and I suppose I could have said rotten taste in hobbies instead. Either way, I tried to say that, unlike dominoes or stamp collection that simply isn't my taste when it comes to what I usually would choose to do at my spare time, what he did on his spare time (I presume that he earned his living as a farrier) is something that I dislike, considers to be dreadful, awful etc.

But I still don't understand how any of this actually affects his ability or inability to shoe a horse. Besides, by taking away his possibility to earn a living as a farrier, I presume that it just makes it more likely that he continues with the illegal cockfighting.

People don't realise these types of crime are often the tip of the iceberg. Environmental crime is the same. People think it is a "fluffy" crime with fluffy green people making a fuss about nothing. Criminals making lots of money out of these illegal activities are also often people convicted of violent crimes, drugs, firearms and many other offences including funding of terrorist activities.

Although I find cock fighting disgusting and really dont agree with it. I have to comment that shoeing my lady for nearly 10 years he was a very very good farrier and never laid a hand on her or any of the other horses. He used to shoe most of the oldies because he was so patient and gentle with them. My lady used to fall asleep on his back when she was being shod and another ladies horse who was scared of men loved having his feet done by him, especially in summer when he could snooze.
I know this because shes never been left unattended with any farrier as she has a talent of either pulling away when tied up or untying herself and wandering off so its safer for her to be held in hand.

Personally I couldnt stand the idea of someone this repulsive having been near me or my precious pony. For me its the same as finding out your baby sitter has been found to have images of children

Well it just goes to show that appearances can be extremely decieving.

Given what I know about cockfighting circles in general, I wouldn't allow this man to breathe the same air as my horse.

This was intentional cruelty and mutilation. That is not somebody who has a 'gentle' nature underneath, however much he may appear that way to clients.

I wouldn't line his pockets with my money that's for sure.

I haven't live in Cheshire for over 7 months now but I do agree with you, I would not have him back to shoe her when we move back there. Just really surprised me reading the article
