Bit of back ground - have a pony on the yard been really fine can get a little stressed when left alone, however always something with him only time on his own is about 5 min when other horses come in, he is turned out 8am - 5.30pm every day in on a night, He is on a grass paddock however no grass whats so ever so has hay thrown in been on hay all winter and gets hay on a night. Fed wise 1/4 mix and 1/2 hi fi and a water. He has been on this all winter and looks well not to fat or thin :)

For the past 3 weeks he has had the real runs :( not grass runs you get around spring ( not green ) its the real splats as in cow splats. He is getting no grass and the tiny bit that is grown should not cause any bother really been in the same field all winter. He is up to date with wormers in fact due 1st april very well in himself and looks well.

Any ideas and what can i give to try and dry him up? i would of thought if it was the tiny bit of grass he would have sorted himself out by now and be use to it however whan i say there is nothing on the field i mean that.

He gets only hay too same stuff he has had all winter.

thanks

I'm a fan of Pink Powder in this situation, usually works well but if not might be worth talking to your vet. I wouldn't underestimate the grass growth though, I have two on a bare paddock, the paddock next door is lush and green so all that grass is going somewhere! In fact come to think of it one of them has been a bit loose for the last day or two.

Thought about the pink powder route, think i will also swap horses about and put him on the arena for abit and see what happens, i would of thiugh though 3 weeks in the field would of sorted him out all the other horses tend to get the splats for a week or so then firm back up, but this one thinks its a cow :) come to think of it its a coloured so could pass as one :)

My boy was like this over the winter: tried Pink Powder, brewer's yeast, limestone powder (very worth a try) but still squitty.

He had to have antibiotics (a lot!) for another problem, and he has been fine in the runny bottom department ever since. I can only assume he had a low-grade bacterial infection of the gut which the 'botics knocked on the head...

Hope you find the answer for your guy :)

If there has been no diet change since he started scouring, I would get the vet out.

Could possible be stomach ulcers, or something more worrying vet will more than likely take bloods. Horse will be at a high risk of dehydration if he is scouring over a long period of time, which of course is worrying in itself.

Does he seem grumpy about getting his stomach area touched?

Vet may also suggest a worm count, even though he is up to date.

I lost my 17 yr old grey 2 summers ago to melanomas and the only symptom was diarrhoea...

Just give hay. Take out all sugar beet/oil out of diet (although you haven't said he has hard feed) and take off grass for while to see if it mkes any difference. Then if no difference put him out on short paddock (pref by himself so you can see anything that comes out of him)

My vet initially ran worm count and bloods, but nothing ever came back apart from gut inflamation. It was a real mystery. Although he had a few melanomas apparently it is very rare for them to cause the problems it did, which wasn't diagnosed until PM.

Try a pink powder type supplement. Vet may get you to Panacur gaurd for encysted red worm.... they can also give you a clay based supplement too.....

I doubt it is caused by the same problem as mine! (unless old and grey, but it's very rare!) Codiene and steroid tablets controlled mine for 4 months (until melanomas dramatically mulitplied within days until he could pass nothing and out only option was to PTS.)

My new horse was like this. He was wormed when he arrived and for the next few weeks was fine, but for no reason at all the runs started. We tried pro-biotics as noted above and they made a slight difference but not much. Rung the vet for advice again and they suggested worming him again with Pramox (the one that does everything). This was indeed the cure.
If its still going i would try worming - just to make sure.

Have found Baileys digest plus very good for this in the past. It is a pre-biotic as opposed to a pro-biotic. I also used to use it on a previous Horse who used to get mild colic after travelling. This supplement totally cured the problem.

My good doer is on a similar regime and has had the same problem in the past. I found lo cal balancer better than pink powder.

Thank you everyone he has been on pink powder 2 days now so fingers crossed it will kick in soon, he is due to be wormed 1st april so going to bring it forwards abit he is do promox this time :)

thanks again

Glad to hear he is ok, I would also bring the worming date forward and do him now. If after a week he is still loose Id definately get the vet out.

Is it like cow pat or is more watery?

can I just add (don't want to complicate) that my vet specidically told me not to use an Equest. The most common worm cause of Diarrhoea is encysted red worm (sure that's what she said) and if he had a heavy burden and you wormed with something like an Equest, they can colic due to the intensity of them exiting (she said she knew one that died due to it). She said it was much more advisable to worm with a Panacur 5 day as it was over a longer period of time and any worm burden exit would be more gentle.

I know you may be think Pramox as it's nearly spring time and you want to worm for tapeworm. But maybe Panacur now and Equitape or something in a month or so?

I know people always reach for the Pink Powder but I've never rated it. Can highly recommend Equimins Pro Bio, contains yea-sacc and bio-mos, completely sorted my boy within 3 days and been fine ever since. Cheap too, its about £10-£11 for a massive tub that lasts ages. Two other people on my yard are now using it and think its fab - I'm not an Equimins employee by the way:)

Always one for the old remedies, LIVE YOGHURT is meant to work wanders, I know people that give it to scouring foals, of course its great fun trying to get it into them!!(not) but it works if the stomach balance has been up set.

Carob kibble or locust bean will sort it just feed it for a few days. You can get a diarrhoea cure in the form of ground carob via ebay - use it as a supplement. Hope this helps. Another idea- speak to a horse herbalist. Good luck,

Heavy scouring can mean a number of worrying things in a horse, especially if it goes on for a while, yes certain feeds/supliments can help but tbh Id get a vet out to take bloods just to rule out anything more serious.

Dingle12 would love ti hear how he is doing? Did you go ahead and worm him and has it helped?

He is still lose but has started to harden up more so i things are kicking in, wormer is on its way they all get promox this time of year and worm count is nill and has been for the last year :)

Spoken to his owner ( he is on loan to us ) and he always get like this at this time of year. So fingers crossed a few more day and back to normal.

Thanks everyone.

Glad to hear he is improving. As for the NAF Pink Poder you could instead use the NAF haylage balancer. It works in the same way I believe but tends to dry them up more effectively (certainly helped for my boy who was loose and fed on hay).

Can also help put weight on them, many ppl with good doers tend to avoid it for this reason, so if he has dropped in weight (due to the scouring) might be a better option over the PP. :) xxx

My friends horse had the same problem with her horse not too long ago, she was advised bby her vet to give him natural youghrt in his feed and it workeda treat! :)
