Ok here goes....
My new horse (came to me beginning of may) bites thin air when in the stable. Very snacky, clacking her teeth together. She doesn't bite people or the door. I noticed that her tongue is bright red on the lateral edges with missing skin. Looks almost skinned. I'm a vet nurse and have asked at work if anyone has any ideas. All we're coming up with is she's coming into contact with something caustic. She eats the same feed and haylage as my others and is turned out in the same paddock. So......
Basically has anyone come across something like this before?
TIA x

Has she any sharp edges on her teeth that are causing her to make this biting action...could they be causing the red areas of missing skin or could she simple be catching the edge of her tongue every now and then?

My first thought is that she may have sharp edges on her teeth. My other thought is that in people vitamin B12 deficiency can cause sores on the tongue so maybe some brewers yeast might help.

Thanks guys. Apparently she had her teeth done in December but I'm going to get them checked again by my dentist. I wondered if she was biting it. Silly mare, it just looks so sore x
