Sorry me again 🙈 vet looking to refer mare with a ligament injury (see post re intersesamoidean injury) and been given options of three counties, b&w or western counties.

Western Counties is closest, but vet says unsure of who they have specialist wise these days, Three counties are very good, as are B&W. Can anyone speak to experience?

We'll be looking to confirm the injury site is driving the lameness, check for anything else going on and then throw the best treatment I can fund at it. That said, I don't want to do things for the sake of it, only where it makes sense so much prefer somewhere that doesn't just like using up the insurance money!

I mean they are all reputable hospitals, so I’d see who is proposed to do the work!

FWIW I’ve used B&W Breadstone for all performance/surgery work (with the exception of wind ops) and have always received really good service.

The only thing I would say is that Oli has left B&W and in certain circumstances I might want him and not use B&W

Are you able to elaborate on what you mean by this? Happy to pm of course 😊

Nothing sinister, he’s just a very good orthopedic surgeon now based at Bourton vale, so depending on what the issue is I might head there rather than B&W. Sesamoid ligament wise not such an issue.

Three Counties generally good but can be expensive.
They are so big, it is a bit vet dependent though, there are some vets I would ask for over others.

I used B&W for a standing hoof MRI and was impressed with their facilities, care, costs and the report.
I wouldn’t hesitate to go back there.

I can highly recommend 3 Counties who I’ve used for the past few years. My mare had surgery and they looked after her so well (after doing gait/ lameness testing). I was kept fully updated

Three Counties are my usual vet, I can’t fault them really, they’ve taken excellent care of my mare in the past few years. She was also referred by them to B&W (as thy had a gastroscope laser) who were also great.

Three Counties aren’t cheap but their hospital is 15 minutes in the trailer so worth it for the convenience.

I have personal experience of both Western Counties and B&W. I will never take a horse to Western Counties again, I’ll make the trek up the M5 to B&W every time now for anything other than routine stuff.

Ah interesting! My gut said B&W and then responses on here seem overwhelmingly to back that up so B&W it is!
