I have an ex brood mare who is now 18/19 (age determined by teeth only!). She’s not quite as robust now as the younger ones, although moves beautifully and loves to be ridden out hacking by her child (to whom she is very attached). Teeth are good.

I’m familiar with joint supplements etc for older horses but that’s not really what she needs - she is more of a poor doer than the others and I wondered more about nutritional support for an older ex brood mare. For most of her life, she was pregnant or lactating and it has taken nearly a year for her to build any muscle. She currently has a standard vit/min supplement and that’s it. In winter she benefitted from Fast Fibre also. Can anyone recommend anything good?

Mine looks fantastic on Spillers Senior Mash. It smells wonderful and is obviously really tasty. It's soaks in minutes so is really convenient, too.

I used Spillers mix when the old man was still with us. It's not as sticky as some but he loved it - mixed in with the usual soaked hay cobs. He did very well on it.

The Spillers balancers are very good. There are several to choose from. Also as someone aboe says, the Spillers mash helps with weight gain.

Another vote for spillers mash. Also if you’re not feeding it already, I’m a huge fan of micronised linseed for condition. I’ve also found that the older ones I’ve had on it seem to move better too and are less stiff.

I feed my 18yo ex-broodmare Topspec Senior Balancer in winter and the Lite version in summer (when she becomes a hippo). In summer, we just have soaked Baileys Meadow Cobs to hide her various joint supplements, but in winter I feed micronised linseed and Coolstance Copra to keep condition on. I also balance her feed with limestone flour - it's a good source of calcium to balance linseed and copra but also as an ex-broodmare they're like to have been a bit depleted at some point.

I have taken mine off linseed after being on it for years (he does look good on it) but am giving cushcare condition a go as what has been recommended on here. I am feeding very little and in combination molasses free beet pulp. Ive had several people comment on him actually putting weight on. He is a 19 year old very very very hard keeper.

If you are looking for weight gain then try Care and Gain from Allen & Page who will send a decent sample for you to try .

We used to use Spillers Senior mash on any of the racehorses who were a bit off colour or needed drugs added. They all loved it and it smells really strongly of apples.
