Yes, my old horse had a spiral fracture of the radius. It showed up straight away as it was pretty nasty (they can take up to 10 days as when the new bone starts to form it can open the fracture line slightly) He had a very good recovery although 3 months cross tied. He did aggravate existing ringbone due to the enforced box rest. It is a worrying time but recovery can be good.
Caught quickly, cross tied - you will be OK, I am sure. Horribly stressful, thinking of you...but it will be fine, but accept lots of box rest for several months, and when you do turn out for the first time, give Raff a full syringe of sedaline.
New Lad has four fractures at the top of his off-fore. He's coming home from the vet on Sunday. If he gets home okay, and stays up rather than lying down (he's not good at being cross-tied) the vet think he will be as good as new.
Lots of positive stories about them, iirc Bruce Davidson had a mare who'd had 1 who healed completely & got to 4* eventing...
He's just got to be a good patient now... biggest VIBES & hugs xxx
((((Vibes))) for Raff and (((Hugs))) for you x Sounds as if it could all have a positive outcome and of course it may not even be fractured! Hoping the time passes quickly for both of youx
A friend of mine owned a mare who had a spiral fracture of her upper foreleg. That healed absolutely fine although she did develop laminitis in the foot of the opposite leg. Before you panic, we firmly believe that was more to do with lack of care by a very large veterinary hospital than the fact she had to stayed cross-tied. Now being older and (maybe!) wiser I would question ANYTHING I don't feel comfortable about and double check that if they say are going to do something that it is done. I also know a pony that had his shoulder fractured by a kick, he did have it plated and at one point got free from his ties, but has returned to full fitness. I do remember being told that bone is the one thing the body that returns to full strength once it has healed.
Good luck with your boy and wishing him a speedy recovery.
Really sorry to read this - please keep us updated. Haven't got any personal experience of this but the experiences shared above sound pretty positive. Sending some much needed (((VIBES))) and (((hugs))). xxx
Just found this - so sorry for you and Raff and hoping for good news this morning.
The only experience I have of spiral fractures is that my husband had one to the top of his femur as part of a large set of breaks. So not a lot of use really although his has healed fine.
Theres a girl on one of the other forums I frequent, She has just had her horse come off crossties after a fracture, horse is now turned out and mended. I had a horse who had a hairline fracture at one point hes fine now too. Everything crossed.
