Horrible day to day. My oldest donkey Bertie has been struggling recently with his arthritis, we have had him on one bute a day for past couple of weeks, and then two a day for the last few days. Sadly he has now developed laminitis that we feel his vaccinations 10 days ago may have been enough to push his old body into the laminitic high risk area. He is not doing well. 48 hours now that is seeing him slowly lose strength and very depressed. Today we are up to 3 bute a day with no sign of improvement so far. He can no longer do more than a little shuffle on the spot and a very awkward stumble to lay down and then needs our help to stand up again. Heartbreaking to watch him.

We love this old chap so much he is 25 years old and has lived here with us for all but 3 months of his life. The decision will be made in the next three days at the most, but he deserves one last chance to rally and he is still eating his hay, if a little reluctantly. His little friend Joseph who is recovering from a nasty foot abscess is very stressed watching him, our lovely vet is making enquiries for a new donkey companion for Joseph if the worst comes to the worst. Or even a trustworthy home Joseph could go to with company if nobody has a donkey that they would be willing to let us take care of here with Joseph.

On top of this one of our dogs who was very unwell earlier this year, is showing signs again of the same issues that led to her hospitalisation for 10 days back in the summer. We were warned she would probably not be with us for too long, but she was doing so well we had almost dismissed the reality of her limited life span.

I don't think I can quite take much more sadness, bloody awful time of the year for us here anyway, excuse the depressing post, I will no doubt give myself a good talking to later and get over myself as always. Some vibes or even a bit of good juju for Bertie and little Jess would be very welcome. 😢
