My mums old tb mare has a mystery illness and it's not looking good :( she lost a large amount of weight within 48 hours, is drinking a huge amount of water, won't eat and wants to lie down all the time and has a huge lump come up on the side of her neck/windpipe area (like a gland, but half way down her neck, not strangles. Nobody seems to know what it is, she's not snotty) Vets suspected laminitis at first but she's sound and her feet appear fine, then they thought cushings but bloods have come back ok, apart from showing a virus. She's not responding to any antibiotics and just refuses to eat, can't even temp her with tasty treats. Vets are back out as we speak and may want to take her in :( she's at least 19 and doesn't travel well. We've had her 12 years :(

Just had a text from mum, vets think it's a tumour. They've given her 24 hours to see how she goes on cortisone and painkillers but mum has said she doesn't want to put her through tests. Heartbroken. She was my first horse.

(((((((((hugs)))))))))) I hope she picks up in the next 24hours. I know how hard it is not knowing whats wrong or how to make it better. :(
Sending lots of ((((((((vibes))))))))) to your lovely mare. xx

I hope she responds to the medication and you can get her better at home, its horrid when they are older and having to decide just how much to put them through! x

Thank you everyone. She was completely away with the fairies on painkillers when mum left the yard tonight but was munching on a bit of hay which is good news. Mums YO lives on site and is going to check on her late tonight. Going to see how she is when painkillers start to wear off and go from there. Thanks for all the nice comments, she was my first horse and I still have my second (and third, fourth, fifth and sixth lol) so I've never had to go through loosing one, I just can't process it and I know poor mum can't either.

Tilli took a turn for the worse and was put to sleep in the sunshine after a nice couple of hours this morning eating grass with the sun on her back.

They broke the mould when they made her, I was 13 when I got her, she once bolted with me for three miles before I was able to stop. She could jump, but only one jump as it would take me 20 laps of gallop before I'd have control again. She hated being groomed, bathed, tacked up, the farrier and especially the vet.

She would spin her bum on me in the stable and stand with her head in the corner because she knew I'd be too scared to put her bridle on. After one particularly bad lesson I un-tacked her in tears and told her I hated her and I was going to send her to the market. I came back after putting my tack away and the cow had eaten all the velvet off my hat and rolled it round her stable!

She was retired soon after as an expensive pet and lived her life being completely spoilt and doted on by my mum.

Sleep tight Tilli.
