Vibes needed please!

Thank you! Apparently it’s a super common racehorse injury so I’ve been reading lots of clinical reports that paint a slightly brighter outlook for the future.

I think I forgot to post! I owned a racer who at 3 pulled his suspensories off his sesamoid bones in a hind foot. He was turned away for a year, when I bought him. When I decided he wasn't a keeper, for unrelated reasons, I sold him and he returned to racing and raced for many more years until he was14.

You have a really decent chance of a full recovery. All my fingers are crossed for you both.

Oh gosh that made me well up a bit! They really are such incredible creatures. I’ve had two days of lovely but guarded vet chats where I’ve been told it’s 50/50 as to whether he’ll be a pet/light hack or actually fulfil some of his athletic ability. Obviously as long as he’s at least field sound and happy I couldn’t care less if we never see the inside of an arena, and the luxury of having them at home means it really doesn’t matter if he ends up a pet, but equally it’s hard when for the past 3yrs I’ve had such high hopes for our future so I refuse to give up hope yet that we’ll be one of the good news stories.

So pleased things are going well - try not to exhaust yourself with too much worry!! I watched a race from Goodwood yesterday where a horse raced (and won, I think - excuse the poor memory) with a screwed and plated cannon bone!!
When my mare was an in-patient for a KS op, I went to see her thinking she might like to see a friendly face. She was too busy stuffing her face with hay to take much notice!!! I think they have their own priorities.;)

We have a few with screwed and pinned legs running and winning so it is perfectly possible.

The other thing to factor in is that he is young .. and has better chance just because of that .. the fact he is still growing will help him mend. All the very best for full recovery.

Yeah we have had a few with sesamoids carry on racing for many years. They get over it well enough. Nothing to say arthritis won't set in a bit earlier than usual but that is the same with any injury. I have loads of great pics of xrays, scans etc. From work as well as some videos of the procedures which are always mesmerising!

It's funny you expect all the equipment to be super high tech and medically type things. When putting screws in a horses leg it is literally a heavy duty screw, a couple of bags of saline to constantly squoosh over the screw/entry site and a bog standard black and decker power drill ??? nothing fancy at all!
