Vile vile weather

We had so much grass this year that I only just pulled them off their summer grazing on the 27th. Now, they're on their foggage track, which is rapidly turning to mud of course but retains some areas of grip underfoot. Mud control slabs in the gateway and around the feeder means they can step out of the quagmire. I was going to bring them in last night but had a moment of madness when the rain eased for up for about 5 minutes ... I then lay in bed all night listening to the torrential downpour and wishing their were in. Not because they care, but because the track can't take much before it's essentially a skiing slope. Of course, this morning they're cheerful enough, but tonight they will come in and every other night too until the weekend where the weather is allegedly SUNSHINE.

The good thing is we're on chalk and with the high winds it dries out amazingly well. I'd happily have gone XC on Monday morning after the dryish weekend. Today, not so much!

I have never been more grateful that I decided to put my retired pony on full livery. I’m bedbound with some kind of flu/covid/virus and it is a huge relief knowing he’s being looked after in this terrible weather and I don’t need to drag myself out in it.

Seriously thinking that when I get another one to ride I need to find somewhere with an indoor school.

I have started bringing my 2 into their individual field shelters with attached little paddocks over night . They usually have access to both shelters and the field all the time now we in the winter fields. I'm still strip grazing as we have plenty of grass but our well-draining ground is getting churned up everyday along the fence line so I'm hoping to preserve it a bit.
They do seem happy to be in and dry.

I went up this morning, later than usual, and thought they might be agitating for their hay. No. They were both in the same stable, not even their noses poking out, and had an air of 'we've been here all night and we're not moving' about them. There was a mountain of droppings in there so I dare say they were in there all night. Have just been up to see if they have gone out yet but no, still in there...

Just taken a very late lunch to get horse in and the wind has gone horizontal. Bits of tree down all over the place, the car park by the office is full of stuff that has blown around the place and a couple of quite deep floods. Had been in office with door shut and blinds down and didn't realise the wind had got up. It is dropping again at 5 ish so shouldn't be too bad but wouldn't want to be driving a high sided vehicle in it.

Squeezed my Spanish lump into his TB girlfriend’s (RIP 😢) rug that has a built in neck today after too many evenings watching him stomp about his stable complaining about how itchy his neck gets after being out in the rain.

Shockingly he squeezed into the TBs jacket & looked very pleased with himself. sadly it isn’t very watertight anymore so looks like I do need to go rug shopping after all. Bah humbug.

Yes the forecast for us also says a week of sunny dry weather from Friday onwards we can but hope!
The good weather always seems to disappear when you get nearer!
Had a load of hardcore delivery to top up walkway and gates which aren't too bad but do need a bit of help.
Just hope they are right this time.

Hallelujah our yard finally agreed to bring all the horses in today (we are all full livery) and they are staying in tomorrow due to flooded fields. Absolutely biblical today the flooding is so bad roads are totally impassable and we were lucky to get home. Probably won’t make it there tomorrow. Husband got stranded in flood water this evening getting back from work, my car is still stuck there 😭 thank goodness for a helpful farmer who gave him a lift home!

So over 2024 already!!!!!

Mine are in tonight and I suspect tomorrow is going to be a duvet day - two trees down on the road home this evening, and everything is boggy and revolting. I haven’t seen it this wet here.

Today was a complete slog. Everything's wet. Dave's so wet, he's gone curly (he's toasty warm, so all fine under his Exmoor woollies).
I was dry under my waterproofs except for my right foot. I forgot I wasn't wearing full length waterproof boots & stood in a deep puddle.
The fields and roads are flooded, the dyke at the road has burst & some of our stables are flooded again. I haven't seen anything like this last month in many years.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who hasn’t been able to ride for almost a week due to the never ending gale force winds, horizontal rain and storm, after storm, after storm !

Currently the only ridden horse is the young one whose going through his teenage stage, so this weather is not conducive to training nor sensible safe hacking behaviour 🙈.
It feels like its been windy forever

The water receded a bit here overnight but yet more rain forecast later.

I'm not going to bother getting excited when I see a dry day forecast any more, as you can bet your life the forecast will have changed by the morning and it'll be tipping it down again.

Weather forecasting in this country is absolutely abysmal.
I don't watch the general forcast as it's just that, general. I follow a local chap on fb who at least is more accurate for our small piece of yorkshire, but it's only day to day, no longer term forcast

Managed a ride in the dry this morning and the worst of the floods have gone down off the roads but it is raining again now. See frost forecast next week which will be harder work.
