This isn't the way I'd planned to spend my Sunday..
B was competing yesterday with the yard team and I came up this morning to be told that he had misjudged an oxer, gotten caught up in the back rail and fell.

thankfully both he and the rider are relatively ok - she has a sore hand and he has an overreach that looks like a bit nasty.
He's a bit sore so the vet is on his way up to check him over.

in a way, I'm glad I wasn't there when he fell because I probably would have panicked but I'm a little bit annoyed that no-one thought to tell me yesterday.

Needless to say, he'll be westing OR boots from now on.

Hope he is okay but I would be having words with your yard team (whoever that is) that you should have been notified even if there were no obvious injuries.

I hate it when people you think you trust and know, let you down

Good luck with the vet. I agree with the others, I think that's pretty off that they didn't call and tell you yesterday. I'd be pretty unhappy about that, it's basic courtesy.

A little bit annoyed??? I would have been fuming if someone crashed my horse and didn't get round to telling me!

Agreed that physio is a good idea after the vet has been. Hope he's ok and that the fall hasn't affected his nerve.

Vet has been and he's given us 10 days of Danilon and 5 days of Norodine.
10 days of walking in hand and no turnout - poor boy is going to end up going spare.

I'm going to have a word with the yard manger - I'll text him if I don't see him. I would have had the vet out to him last night if I'd known.

physio is a good idea - I'll get him checked again before I get on him.
Hopefully his confidence hadn't been affected - he's a sensitive soul and hates getting things wrong.

Poor lad. Hopefully he will be more comfortable soon.

Is this someone you are paying to compete him?

I hope that they have a darned good answer to why they didn't let you know. I know things can happen but I would find it difficult to let the same team continue competing my horse unless there was a good reason rather than just an oversight or worse they thought it wasn't worth 'bothering' you about. Hope you get things sorted out.

Speaking to the physio is a good idea. Sometimes they need to wait awhile after accidents/injury before they want to do anything.

Yup.. Plan was for him to be jumped for me to get a bit more experience while I sort myself out. My dad is pretty annoyed about it.

Accidents happen... The rider was lucky she didn't get seriously hurt because he's a big boy (17.3 big boned Irish hunter type) and he could have done a lot of damage if he'd fallen on top of her.
Both YM and rider have my mobile number so there's not really any excuse to not have told me, especially since B fell.

I was about to tack him up to get on him when I was told.
YM is supposed to be about later on so will have a word.

B's had some bute this morning to make him a bit more comfortable. I'll need to dig out his likit holder so he has something to entertain himself with while he's in.

Picture is pretty rubbish - I don't have the steadiest hands and he kept moving his foot.

To be fair, the overreach wound doesn't look too bad but it's right on the coronet band so I was worried he'd done some damage and I couldn't tell how deep it was.

It was the fall that worried me and he was obviously sore when I walked him in-hand in the school. I wasn't sure if that was from the fall or the overreach. I've never had a horse fall before.

Off to the yard to walk him and see if I can sneak him some grass before the afternoon lot go out.

He seemed better this afternoon and I had a word with the head girl when I was up.
YM wasn't in so will have to speak to him tomorrow when it cancel my lessons.

Well YM just texted and appologized.

I might pop the massage pad on him tomorrow to see if it helps with the stiffness and he'll go in the solarium for a bit before I walk him.

Glad he's better today. It may just have been that they wanted to tell you in person - accidents explained over text always come across worse in my opinion than they actually were!

If its any help I have seen much worse than this and its heal up no problem :)

Really sorry to hear that and hope he makes a full recovery. A visit from the physio would be a good idea after an unknown trauma

I'm going to get him checked over before he comes back into work.
Have posted in the regional board asking for a recommendation for a physio and I'll ask at the yard as well. :smile3:

Sorry to hear about your horse. Just to clarify the situation on physios/chiropractors/osteopaths etc. You must get a referral from you vet, and not go directly to the physio etc. The vet must be responsible for the treatment given, and only a vet can give a diagnosis and give treatment. This is set out in the Veterinary Act 1966. I hope he recovers quickly.

Also get his saddle checked. One of my lads fell with me few years ago whilst jumping and turned out later on that accident had partially fractured the tree. Wasn't picked up with normal tests until saddler opened saddle up to check when I started to hear an usual squeak when went out hacking.

When I was in your area 20 odd years ago Ruth Torrance was good physio

he wasn't wearing my saddle - yard is a typical SJ one where one saddle 'fits' all and they use their own tack (thankfully). But thank you for the heads up - I wouldn't have though the check that.

I've managed to remember who I used a few years ago.
He's already seen the vet, who said the lameness is from the over reach.
Obviously if he has done some damage then the vet will be called out again.
