Why is the FEI so concerned that they feel the need to change the rules to ban mules? They are hardly going to be threatening the worlds top riders in any discipline, are they?

Hands off our Wallace, FEI ! Let's hope British Dressage has more sense than to follow if the FEI changes their rules.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...n-chiefs-not-ban-rescue-mule-competition.html

British dressage have stated that they do not always follow FEI rules, this apparently will be put forward to the technical team and a decision will be made from there.

This is bonkers - really inclusive stuff here......not.

I can't understand the lower horse height limit for FEI dressage either though (can sort of see the point with jumping disciplines and striding lengths but not dressage).

Hopefully the national bodies will ignore this silly proposed rule about mules just as they have about height limits.

I don't think this is about people feeling threatened. It was originally the FEI's woolly rule that allowed Wallace to eventually compete BD, because BD changed their rules to be in line with the FEI one.

The proposal to tighten it up seems to be about comparing like animals with like in competition, see https://inside.fei.org/system/files/MEMO_FEI GRs Rules Modification 2019 - 8 July 2019.pdf page 11

which is itself does not seem such a bad principle. I enjoyed watching Wallace and he's been out and done a few more shows this year which is great, but I do understand the idea behind what the FEI are doing.

I didn't know about the height limit, what height have they set it at?

But Wallace is more like Millie than Millie is like Valegro, or a Shire, for that matter.

in fairness the rest of the proposals seem to be quite sensible, on the whole.

I agree.

I wonder, after seeing the points about mules whether that is through looking at genetic ethics in the broadest sense and that at present there's a feeling there may need to be some kind of 'catch all' rule ..........

Is this the end of top hats then?
reads that way.... I hope not, I know different people have different viewpoints but I choose to wear one sometimes and I will be sad to see them go.

I don't quite understand the reason for excl vaulting from that - not suggesting they should have to wear helmets but to say they aren't "riding" the horse is a bit weird :p

I guess it's the one equestrian sport where the horse isnt under their control, it might as well be a mechanical one.

yeah I can see the distinction, but if they fell off and got kicked in the head or whatever, it wouldn't make any practical difference ;)

My mule has just retracted her application for an FEI passport and is very sad she won't be making her International dressage debut anytime soon.
I think she's more Valegro than donkey......

Well personally I think Millie is more like valegro given what she can produce than even the most horse-like Mule so I was a bit confused what you did mean.
