Hi All
I just finished putting in my annual order for my horses in Morocco (I work in Hong Kong and only get to see them for around 7 weeks in the summer). I've now been told that the online equestrian shop I used (and love) cannot send any liquids abroad! I cannot buy ANY horse products in Morocco and rely upon relatives bringing them when they come to see me or from what I can fit in my suitcase. Below are my banned items and I was hoping that you could help me find some alternatives which I could easily find in Morocco? I've searched avidly through the alternatives to flyspray and this week I'm meeting an Avon lady to buy some Skin So Soft. Apart from that I implore you to use your skills to come up with some good ways to help me out of this situation. Prize for the best!
Listed below are the items we are unable to send due to Customs. Unfortunately, I don’t think there will be any alternatives as we simply will not be able to get any liquids or creams through customs.

instead of your leather stuff - how about good ol' glycerin saddle soap with a moisturising grease? - like NAF leather balm?
Instead of shampoo and detangler, just use baby shampoo then wipe a little veg oil through the ends of the mane or tail.
I wouldn't use hoof oil myself, esp as I imagine it is pretty hot and dry in morocco. It will seal the moisture out rather than allowing the hoof to moisture regulate itself. If you are concerened that the hooves are too dry then hosing them or tipping your trough out to make mud will get some moisture into them.
Instead of purple spray, can you clean any wounds with salt water, then treat with a human wound cream?
hth, shall have a good think for some more!

I am not giving you any help because I am dead jealous of you living in a warmer country than me.....

Sorry - don't mean that but other than searching through internet web sites and contacting them and asking them if they will post to Morocco I don't know. Mind you, I would have thought that Hong Kong with it's enormous and very posh horse population you would be able to buy it all there and pack it into your own suitcase??

I will also add though - not that you asked for it - but I have been reading that catnip oil is THE best fly repellant in the whole world.

Good luck.

Thanks for this - yes I do agree about the hoof oil but we have a couple of little shows (mainly tack and turnout with a bit of riding) and my daughter and her friends love to dress up the horses with plaits and hoof oil (hence the strange amounts of gold and pink glitter hoof oil on order)!

Please don't hate me cos I'm lucky!!! Actually I only get to see my horses for the summer so it's not so good. Hong Kong has two tack shops and the prices would make your eyes pop out!

I did wonder about the amount of sparkle I must admit! In that case then I would just use veg oil again - will give a nice gloss for the show ring.

Shoe polish is good for feet... and black pepper makes decent wound powder for little nicks and scrapes.

Not sure how expensive it would work out - but can you get hold of confectioners glitter (comes in tiny pots over here and isnt cheap, but its quite bright) and mix that with coconut oil or something to put glitter on their manes and tails and feet??

Thanks for this - it's exactly what I'm looking for - can I please ask how you apply black pepper? Would it be sprinkled onto the wound directly or made into a paste? I can get tonnes of natural oils and condiments and spices.

I've just bought some pots of glitter from the local paper shop in Hong Kong and I plan to do what you say.
Cheers!

Were you thinking of using the skin so soft as a base for fly spray? I only ask as last summer we used tea and vinegar as a base, as we were worried about the effect of oil on the skin in the sun, and I know it is not as hot here as it is in Morocco.

Yes it's very hot - are you in Southern Spain? Do you get liquids delivered or have you been banned too?

aloe vera gel for cuts, sores etc, you can use the banana boat after sun stuff but if you can get the pure stuff it is better. Weve just started using it and its amazing for EVERYTHING!! Got rid of some rather large scar tissue too! furniture ploish for de-tangler and washing up liquid for shampoo - its so good!

hoof oil..

do you get vasaline out there? that works very well as a moisturiser.

for mane tail/conditoner.. funiture polish is fab at detangling adding shine and keeping dust off!

You could mix gitter dust (lots on ebay) with vaseline to make your own glitter hoof polish.

Heat some black shoe polish (the kind that comes in a small tin eg Kiwi) to soften it and mix with vaseline to make a dark hoof gloss.

Can you get leather balsam for shoes in Morocco? It should be fine to use on your tack.

we used to just pop it on "neat" - it works well on fresh wounds to stop the bleeding.

I bought loads of so soft to use as fly spray on my horse, but it brought her out in large, oily welts - so its not for everyone !!! ( I sold two and kept the other to use on myself though - tis fab for keeping visitors off!!)

I live in France and can't get half the stuff I want either.
I use R&R Country in Hemingborough, Yorkshire.( you can google them, they are very efficient and have been very good to me) From what I can gather, a lot of powders and liquids not being sent out is a lot to do with company policy rather than restrictions by customs. Robinsons wouldn't send me Respirator or codliver oil but R&R Country have sent it to me several times already without any problems, bit hefty on the postage though with the codliver oil as you can imagine!

Thanks a lot for this name - I too used Robinsons but they don't ship any liquids anymore - so I switched to a different company but now I find they don't ship either. I'll give them a google (but looking at all the suggestions for alternatives I think I've pretty much got most of the stuff I need)!
