If you use paypal for payment and it is quite a well priced saddle, Paypal will HOLD the money until the buyer puts feedback.

What is to stop them selling the saddle on, not adding feedback and therefore you will not get your payment! This is the problem I am now having, I neither have the payment nor the saddle and the saddle has been received by the buyer.

I cannot start a query through the resolution centre because technically the payment has been made, but because no feedback has been added, no payment goes into my account. So, in the case of a saddle, if it doesn't fit, even though you do not have a returns policy, the buyer can more or less ensure you will take the saddle back... however, what happens to it between the time you sold it to the time you receive it back is a real gamble and one that I will NEVER be taking ever again!!!

That is paypal not ebay. I had similar issue

Does this policy cover all purchases of Ebay items on Paypal?

I have never checked to see if the money has actually transferred, just assume it has when it tells me payment is received so I can post article.

Surely is this was the case, Ebay shops could find themselves in a very poor position

Same thing happend to me with another expensive item, they held the money for nearly 2 weeks. I will not be selling anything particularly valuable on Ebay again.

I now find myself £890.00 out of pocket as it stands because the money has been put on hold. I think it is absolutely disgraceful that this is happening, the item was posted, received and has been tried on the horse!

I clearly state on my ebay that I do not have a returns policy and now I have neither the saddle nor the money and I do not know whether I am going to get either at this moment in time.

I phoned Paypal and they said it was all down to Ebay not them!

I now have to wait 21 days to see whether the buyer puts feedback, but in the meantime I am £890.00 down. I am not a shop, I am a one item seller and this money is very important to me!

My understanding is that PayPal hold the money for 21 days and provided you can then prove the saddle has been received, and it's in your T&C's to send it by trackable means anyway, the money will be released. If your buyer leaves positive feedback earlier then your money is released earlier.

Here's the words from their own mouths: What will happen if my payment is held?
If you receive a payment that is held by PayPal, the amounts held will show as “Pending” in a separate PayPal balance on your account page. You will still have access to all other funds in your PayPal account. Your funds will immediately be released when one of the following occurs:
* The buyer leaves you positive feedback
* 21 days pass without a dispute, claim, chargeback, or reversal filed on the transaction.

If you receive a dispute, claim, chargeback, or reversal on the transaction subject to the hold, PayPal may hold the payment in your Account until the matter is resolved, even if the claim, chargeback or reversal is made after the hold is released.

For more information the people on this ebay board are very knowledgeable.

I understand all of that... but my problem is that I do not have the saddle (which I have proof was delivered both via text message, email and ebay message as well as the tracking number etc) and I also do not have the money in my account.

They go on and on about protecting the buyer, I think they need to reassess because the seller needs to be protected too. At this moment in time I am almost £900.00 at a loss

That is a lot of money right now!

i'm in the middle of a similar problem, except i'm the buyer. i won a saddle, the seller is saying she won't send it until i give positive feedback for this reason...

i can't do that, as i'll won't have a leg to stand on if the saddle never turns up...

i can understand her point of view... but all i can do is tell her i'll leave feedback asap. sadly, the longer she takes, the less inclined i feel!

what a pain! stoopid ebay. i hope you get your money soon. could you email the buyer and explain the situation so they leave your feedback? if the saddle doesn't fit, that's not something they can leave bad feedback for anyway... x

Yes, I have done that already but just received info that the saddle does not fit.

One thing is for sure, I will never be selling anything on ebay again! This is a complete farce and an honest conscientious seller has seriously lost out right now

Oh, and to add... the saddle does not fit the horse, therefore the buyer does not want it and therefore will not complete the payment!

just saw this after posting my last one...

they can't do this! even if they don't leave the feedback, as long as they don't take out official dispute, you'll get the money 21 days after transaction.
and they can't start a dispute because the saddle doesn't fit. that's their problem, as long as you listed it correctly.

good luck!

I can't wait 21 days... anything could happen!

They could damage the saddle and claim it arrived damaged etc etc
frown.gif
21 days is a long time to be without the saddle or the money!

I sold a saddle on ebay and as I am a complete numpty about saddles sizes I measured it everywhere and showed photos of where we took the photos and emphasised that it was narrow.

I sent it to Ireland and when the person got it they said it was too narrow and started a dispute saying it was not as described - when it was completely as described.

The buyer then sold the saddle but would not stop the dispute. It's a total farce. In the end I have to give her £50 back to get my money. Would never sell something that needs fitting on ebay again.

I had exactly to same thing happen when I sold my saddle (& strangely stirrups

) on ebay about 2 months ago. I spent ages on the phone to both ebay & paypal & each blamed the other for the policy.
Like you I didn't want to send the saddle until had the money was released, but paypal told me I had no choice & it would only be released after possitive feedback or 21 days

I did send the saddle, kept the buyer constantly updated & asked them to leave feedback as soon as it had arrived safely. Thankfully they did.
However, like you I would never sell a large value item on there again, unless the buyer collected & paid cash.

They have gone to much in favour of the buyers & they are going to start to loose genuine private sellers if they continue like this

Ooo this is a concern. I'm about to put a saddle on ebay in the next few weeks.

I have sold two previously though with no problems at all.

Amymay... it is a new scheme as I have also sold a saddle previously and had no issues whatsoever, it is what made me sell this one via ebay.

However, I will never ever be selling something like a saddle via the site again due to this. I just cannot believe there is no seller protection... the seller is left with no item nor any money as a result of selling said item!

I have a shop on Ebay and unfortunately its just not a fair system at all! I constantly get people saying things are 'lost' in the post and there isn't anything we can do as they hold all the cards regarding feedback as sellers cannot leave negative feedback! The post office are also very unhelpful in claims regarding Ebay sales. We cannot afford to put everything recorded delivery due to cost and remaining competitive with other sellers prices.

Its worth knowing that people can also claim monies back through Paypal once you have drawn them down and you can end up with a negative balance as unfortunately they tend to find for the buyer regardless!

Pointless rant really...!

tough titties i say they have bought it god i'd be really cheesed off too.

when i bought a saddle off ebay I made sure i could get it fitted and send it back if it diddnt fit-which it diddnt but as you say that was a shop who was in the position to allow me to do that! People are so bloody infuriating!

I am going to close my Ebay account. They make you have a Paypal account now, they charge you for selling your item then they charge youagain to receive the funds.

I have only ever sold one high value item on there (also a saddle) but that was before these stupid rules.

god that's crap isn't it?! of ebay/paypal and the buyers. i'm starting to go off of ebay now, i have over 1000 positive feedback and still ebay/paypal will not sort out minor problems for me. even tho they take enough money off of me to sell items.
i really hope this works out good for you after the 21 days - what a ridiculous ruling.

You will get your payment after 21 days has elapsed (providing the buyer doesn't raise a complaint against you in the meantime).

Assuming your buyer will be happy with their saddle, the longest you will have to wait is 21 days and that's only if they don't leave feedback for you.

Know this new policy will put me off from sellings saddles on eBay in the future. Rather a bummer as I have 2 Australian stock saddles to sell and was rather hoping to use eBay. With eBay insisting every transaction has to offer PayPal as a payment method - you cannot even get around the problem by asking for other ways of payment. It's crud for the seller.

I experienced same problem but from the other side of the fence as a buyer. I bought a stock saddle from a nice lady and paid immediately by Paypal. After despatch the seller contacted me to ask that I please don't delay in adding feedback as Paypal were holding onto the funds pending positive feedback. I did this as soon as I received the saddle (which incidentally didn't fit but I wouldn't dream of not honouring the purchase). I was horrified on behalf of the seller to find out about this policy. It was a lovely saddle which I subsequently sold through a small ad in the local paper. This was an easy route and in my experience recommended.

I think if the seller dispatches the saddle, and then sends a polite email to their buyer explaining the predicament with the PayPal funds until feedback is left - few reasonable buyers would refuse to leave prompt feedback.

I wonder if eBay would permit sellers to state the predicament PayPal payments cause the seller, on the actual listing page so the buyer knows the situation before purchasing. Expect not
frown.gif

Agree that most genuine buyers would have no hesitation in complying with a polite request. It's a nice little earner for Paypal though - my money was deducted on the day of purchase and not credited to seller until 6 days later when I had received the saddle and posted the positive feedback.

Another warning to sellers: if you sell something and the buyer pays by Paypal, which is shown as a cleared payment, this doesn't mean the payment will not be withdrawn at a later date, even if there is no chargeback issued.

This happened to me. Item sold, payment received, item posted. 10 days later, the payment is withdrawn by Paypal - the reason: the seller's card was declined (both funding sources).

This situation actually ended up with me and OH phoning the buyer, who was not dishonest just didn't have any money, until he posted a postal order. But Paypal didn't want to know, and I could easily have lost out on that transaction.

I used to sell masses of stuff on ebay, but hardly ever now.
