Right, it has taken me forever to get these photos uploaded!!

Anyway this is just a warning to everyone with horses – please tell everyone about these Clip buckets!! PHOTOS ARE A BIT GRAFFIC

This is my future star colt 3yr old, we almost lost everything because of this Clip bucket - this is the clip that the bucket attaches too:- http://www.derbyhouse.co.uk/prodshow.asp?id=803&cat=312&scats=312 . He was a GIT with tipping his water bucket over every night, not only did this get his bed sopping wet but he had no water through the night and would be thirsty in the morning. I got so fed up a friend said get a Clip (on the wall) bucket he wont tip that! so out I went spent loads of money and vwallar he couldn’t tip the bucket, he had water all night and a dry bed. Few weeks later he started to try and pull the bucket of the wall, couple days later I went out to find that he had not only succeeded in undoing the bucket but he had caught his bottom lip in the clip and had ripped over 8” of his bottom lip clean off and ripped some of the inside at the corner where the bit sits. Now you could say stupid person for using it but they are classed as SAFETY buckets and a lot of people use them, but seeing how accident prone horses can be I should have seen the danger, but unfortunately we just don’t.

Vet was called yet the bloody receptionist told the vet that it was a little scratch so I had to hold his torn lip for an hour and 30mins, it went cold and half died.

The photos below are of when he first did it and then when he came back from surgery (and the half had rotted and died off) – he has just had his 3rd operation and it looks a lot better – you wouldn’t really know anything has happened, but I haven’t got a picky yet), thankfully he can be bitted but im not sure how he will be in the dressage arena as it does look as if hes mouth is partly open when bitted, my vets have agreed to write a letter so I can show judges, he never opens his mouth with a bit and is very good, but due to the amount of lip he has left I cannot use a flash – thank god he doesn’t need one.

Subsequently he doesn’t tip his buckets now and has just a rubber water bucket that he NEVER touches – a bit of a drastic lesson and a very expensive one too.

OMG poor boy and poor you, we try to see the dangers in everything but we just can't horses always seem to find something to hurt themselves on. Hope he will be ok.

Thank you for warning us all about these things and I hope he can recover from this. I have seen people do such stupid things [ not that you have] one thing I really hate is when people tie their horse up using their bit. It makes me feel sick to think about it. We have to think all the time of what might happen
Hugs to you and your horse

Poor neddy. What a disaster.

My mare used to sling her water all over the stable so I know how you feel.

I actually fitted a tie ring down by the bucket and tie the bucket to it using one strand of baler twine and a quick release knot.

I must admit I am very wary of spring clips and horses. I tend to use locking carabinas or be nice ropes as they have a locking clip.

I have seen some nasty injuries using spring clip lead ropes and lunge reins. They are just as dangerous IMO.

oh my god poor horsey, i wud have passed out if i went down the yard and found my horse like that.
No wonder he will never do it again, i just showed it to OH and he said same happened at the yard he works a while ago but the clip got stuck on nose and ripped half of its nose off.
I really hope he has a full recovery and is feelin better soon

Thanks for the warning. I've always been wary of using spring clips though such as on the stable door to stop them fiddling the latch open, heard of some nasty injuries and now can see exactly what kind. Sorry your poor boy had such a horrible injury, lips and so on usually heal well though.

Many thanks for the warning and I will pass this on to anyone I know as it is something I feel is important to pass on.
I know accidents can happen no matter how safety conscious we are around horses, but in light of how bad this injury is I feel it is worth noting that these spring clips can be severe hazards.
Those injuries are indeed horrific and look very painful for the said horse. I hope he has recovered well and that any judge takes into consideration his horrific injuries he endured when he is in the judging ring.
It may also be worth including some copies of the photographic evidence of the injuries with your vet's letter when you compete so the judges can see for themselves just what the poor lad recovered from.
Big hugs to you and I hope your lad does well in the future

I haven't heard fo the clip bucket, if I had I would probably have bought one. Thank you for the warning! My girl managed, in an empty stable, with no sharp projections, to cut her hock narrowly missing the joint capsule and putting her out of action for a week.

Hope your lad continues to heal well and quickly.

Poor boy, really glad hes on the mend.
I hate the spring clips, they make me cringe on leadropes and I always buy the trigger ones as my boy always grabs his leadrope when I put his headcollar on, these clips are on trailer ties too, scary.
The clips on the bucket clips are designed to fasten the dangerous way, my friend has one in her stable!

Oh my! That's one heck of an injury, poor lad.

I suspect it will heal up very well; sending my best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I used two of these to secure a hay tub in a corner and they were low down and couldnt be reached by the horse but I caught my finger in one about 3 days after putting them in and it ripped an inch of my flesh off so your poor boy... I know what pain he must have been in!!! Needless to say, I dont use them anymore...

i wouldnt buy one of these because i felt they are an Accident waiting to happen...

my OH has fixed an ordinary ringtie to the wall and the tub trug is fixed with baler twine...breakable in an emergancy.

i think sometimes, the things that some companies come up with, really havent been thought out properly

We alwasy used to just put a couple of rocks/bricks in the my sister's horse's water bucket, that seemed to stop him tipping it up. If he still did then he'd be without water (his own fault then!). He hasn't tipped his bucket for seveal years now - think it's just a youngster thing isn't it. Some horses will get into anything no matter what you do!

Nasty injury though and always shocking the things they can do to themselves!

Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts, he was such a brave boy, he was more intrested in eating his hay at the time than worrying over his lip but then again i think he had gone through most of the pain during the night as the blood was everywhere.

I did think of writting to the company and DH but my vets said it wouldnt do anything because they make to much money on it and its just like road traffic you have to have like 5 deaths before they do anything about the road, so they wont give a hoot about my poor boy

or what it could do to other horses.

JM07 - i would have tried what you do but a horse i know got his tongue caught in the twin and cut a bit off
frown.gif
.

also i was advised to put a rock in it but then someone said that there horse had flipped the bucket with the rock and hit its self with the rock

its difficult to know what to do. luckily he doesnt touch it anymore but the things i tried before.

those triangle feed buckets on the floor, in the corner, but he scratch his legs on it and bent it
smirk.gif
.

Also haynets, the same horse in the photo ripped his forelock out (all of it) while i was plating he rubbed his head on the haynet and got the plate caught, then the haynet moved with him, he freacked and pulled it out
shocked.gif
.

blo*dy horses are a nightmare - but if this helps just a little in preventing people from using these god horrid clips than thats good!

i just wanted a magazine to do an article on it - dont think they would do it though

Oh wow - he's quite accident prone then!!

Thanks for the warning. I use XL trugs for hay and one of mine tosses it all around her stable. I was very close to buying spring clips (oh how foolish we can be in our naivety) to attach it to the wall. Won't be doing that now - if the horse is stupid enough to toss her hay about and trample it, that's her problem....

I agree not sure about using bailer twine though. The other night, my other horse managed to get her haynet off the wall (despite my best efforts to secure it). In the morning, she had managed to wedge it under her shoe and was shuffling around her stable with it. I had to quickly cut it then pull it out sideways, it was about an inch in from her heel. It would seem that if your horse started pawing the bucket, the same could happen, ie get the twine caught under the shoe. And bailer twine doesn't break that easily.

Blimey it's a minefield, isn't it? I wonder if they even appreciate our efforts to keep them safe, when they seem so hell-bent on hurting themselves

I have 2 of these clips on the wall in my mare's stable to attach her hay trug to aswell to stop her slinging it about.

So far I haven't used them as the trug got used for a field water bucket - they will be coming off the wall tomorrow morning after seeing these pics - I'd rather she waste a little hay eating it straight from the floor than get damaged.

My clips were done facing the wall for safety but now I just want them off!

What an horrific story. How glad I am that I managed to stop my little mare throwing her water bucket around by putting it inside a couple of old tyres. All the best for your boy's continuing recovery.

My clips faced the wall too. But like my vet said if it gets could and the horse pulls nothing gives as its fixed to the wall so the only thing to give is the skin
frown.gif
.

All of mine have been broken up (to make sure now one takes them out to use) and thrown away down the dump.

putting tyres in are maybe better but i knew ahorse that broke her leg in one in the field and had to be PTS
frown.gif
.

Horses are such scary animals they need hay on the floor and an old fasion concrete water troff - i cant see that they could hurt them selves on that

Poor horse. They do themselves some stupid injuries.

Mine managed to trip over a few weeks ago & fell onto his head standing on his lip & cutting about an inch of the inside of his top lip. It was hanging off & there was a fair bit of blood. My friend was riding him for me at the time & he'd spooked at another horse coming towards him when he tripped. I rung the vet & they said the skin that was hanging should die & fall off & it did. Whilst the wound was still there I kept it clean with some antiseptic mouthwash which my horse loved 'cos it was mint flavored. It was the easiest wound to clean.

I'm sure your boy will heal very well. Mine was obviously nowhere near as serious but it looked fine within a week.

My colts waters are the corner feed manger, this stops them knocking it over and if they knock their feed over they can forage for it.

Sorry to hear about your colt, that looks really painfull x

Oh your poor poor horse, I do hope he recovers well and it heals as well as it could do and thank you for the warning, very shocking.
