Hi,

Just wanted to share my frightening experience with you and hopefully stop some one being badly injured.

I was schooling my mare on Tuesday just the usual as I was cantering, she lost her balance (she is just a youngster) as she did that I lost my stirrup when this happened she panicked and I started to fall. I always ride with a hat but only recently started using gloves.

When I fell off got up and thought great no prob feel fine right hand was sore and pinkie was at a funny angle but thought it was staved. Anyway got back on had a go at everything hand was beg to get sore and very swollen.

left it overnight as wasn't that sore, but by lunch following day was getting very back 5hrs in a&e later and I have made a real mess of my hand shattered a bone which had been moved on top of my knuckle. I am now in a huge cast with a possibility of surgery(bones have been manually moved at mo)

Surgeon explained it is a twist injury I went one way twisting as Rosie went the other, if I hadn't had gloves on the reins would have ripped the skin from my hand or the bone would have went through my skin. My leather gloves saved my injury from being much much worse. I will now always wear gloves.

Just wanted to share my experience in the hope this can help someone else, I was very lucky was such a freak accident.

thanks for reading this long post

Oh that sounds so painful!! Must admit I can't ride without gloves, think its from my old riding instructor who wouldn't teach unless we wore gloves so it's just a habit now...makes for lovely suntan marks over the summer!!;)

aww i hope you are feeling better soon and dont have to have surgery! Although it would probably speed up the healing!
I am the same as jsr i have to wear gloves after many years of always hvaing to wear them as instructor wouldnt allow me to ride without...i also have lovely white hands and brown arms...not exactly a good look ;)

WOW, here's wishing you a speedy recovery :)

I usually only ride with gloves when it's cold. I have very comfortable reins and have never considered wearing them from a safety point of view

Thanks for posting

Excellent warning, although very sorry for OP. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

If you don't like the tan lines consider this - I was once taught at a school so formal long sleeves were compulsory when mounted. Pearly white all over!

I always wear my gloves riding, they live inside my hat so when the hat goes on so do the gloves! And typically on the one occasion in about the past 6 years that I didn't ride with gloves on I got properly slatted and ripped the skin off my knuckles - sod's law indeed.

Sounds like a proper freak accident, hope you're not too sore and you're back on board soon!

Yikes! Hope you recover quickly and well.

I always wear gloves but not really for safety in that sense, just to stop burns and callouses etc. Glad I do now!

I always wear my gloves now.
Only because i had a similar injury to you, that needed surgery in the end.The surgeon mis diagnosed it,and resulted in me loosing my finger and bones up through my palm.I am now left with a scar that is very sensitive,so do not dare ride without gloves now!

Gosh. How awful. Hope you recover well.

I always wear them too. Especially after forgoing them once on a warm day. I went for a 3 hour hack andmy fingers were blistered as hell afterwards.

I bet that post took you ages to type out one-handed too...

Thanks everyone I am very sore but just glad it wasn't worse and hoping it wont require surgery. I have to be very careful because the slightest bang could dislodge the bone. Hopefully it will heal fast and will maybe get to some shows at the end of the summer.

Yes its taking ages to type its my right hand that I've broken and I would be right handed so everything is taking 10 times longer.

Gx

Me too!! Old instructor told me that most important thing after your hat, is your gloves and I cannot ride without them now!!

To solve your suntan problem:

I have them and THEY WORK!! :D

What a good job you were wearing your gloves!
I do usually wear mine, although I have to admit that in the very warm weather we had recently, I did risk it without. I would NEVER wear anything but long sleeves when riding, purely from a safety point of view. I can't actually remember it but I guess that my 1st RI made a point of this - she was a stickler for safety. She would never let us eat sweets or gum when riding either, in case we fell off and choked!
Wishing you a speedy recovery, without surgery!

Thank you for the warning, i never ride in gloves except for showing so think i need to invest in an every day pair now and will just have to get used to it.

I too always ride in long sleeved tops but 3 weeks ago I wasnt planning on riding but got to the yard, changed my mind and ended up riding in a vest in the menage. My cob tripped over, went completely down and launched me over his head and i ended up with grazes all up my arms and shoulders from the sand and rubber :( My horse is so good I think i have become to confident with him.
