I have a Discovery. It's been through two MOTs (last was three days ago).

Yesterday went to go out in it. Flat tyre. Garage said there was no hole or nail, it had split along the beading (where tyre fits to wheel). They hadn't seen it before. They checked tyre rating. Tyres NOT rated for 4x4. Sidewalks not strong enough to take weight!

These are big road tyres as opposed to off-road or hybrid type. They were on the car when we bought it a year ago. Tyre pressures were checked weekly and they always needed more air (I thought it was a Disco thing).

This car is a seven seater and is often full. Tows frequently. Does hundreds of miles a week. Just so lucky it went when we weren't in it!

Now sat in garage awaiting four new tyres tomorrow morning.

Hope this makes sense, head not at its best today.

Oh dear

if so.

Not quite the same--have had LR from new but now dont do hundreds of miles most weeks
Plenty of tread left but tyres had started to perish with age between treads--so new all round expensive week!!
Know next job is to fit new tyres to trailer--likely to be in similar condition as on from new and now over the recommended 6 years of age, but impossible to see without taking wheel off
There was a post not long ago about unsuitable tyres being fitted to trailers--not able to take recommended pressures.
Take care out there everyone bargains are often not what they seem

Q - not a main dealer, but a 4x4 specialist

Given that they are worse than useless will not be taking it back.

Not bad on the price. As a I hate the car, I'm having only budget tyres (but Disco rated ones and from a recognised supplier and garage!), so £95 each including fitting and balancing, therefore bearable

I work in the trade and we have noticed that manufacturers are starting to date their tyres. We have had a couple of customers in lately asking for their tyres to be changed as they have been told they are out of date. BTW their tyres were fine and didn't need changed. Thats probably going to be the next thing - use by dates on tyre WFT?

Your insurance could be invalid if you don't have the correct tyres on.

Interesting! But how does one know? I knew about ratings for speed, having had a number of fast-ish cars in the past, but didn't know that there are ratings for weight of vehicle. And, just to add to it, this car went through two MOTs with these tyres on and there wasn nothing said about their rating

I can understand the 'use by dates' on tyres. Rubber perishes over time: when I used to buy bits of aeroplanes, any parts that had rubber in them were time limited.

How odd, I am sure our MOT garage would query the tyre rating for the MOT.

I was considering asking what garages should be checking with regard to tyres - I know that obviously the tread is checked, but as to the rating...

Acording to paperwork I'm looking at loading index and speed rating only come into play on mot fails if class 7 vehicle. Could be wrong but OH (an MOT tester is asleep - daren't wake him up) so reading testers manual.

Ah, thank you Merry44. 'Tis interesting (and very right not to wake him, that would not be good

, mine get's grumpy if woken up).

Seems barking if the weight of the car is too much for standard tyres, but it's not checked on the MOT! Can't even take the blasted thing to a 'normal' garage 'cos their equipment isn't big enough to cope.

I had a similar problem with the Fourtrak I borrow from my Dad over the summer, he has never changed the tyres on it since he bought it. Went out the other morning to find a flat tyre.

Got my OH to pump up the tyre and take it to the garage thinking it was a puncture to find that the tyre is illegal for on road use as someone had put an inner tube in a tubeless tyre... Looking online this seems to cause some kind of weakening in the inner tube so you often go out to find a tyre has gone flat overnight.

Mrs M - The load/Speed rating tend to be after the tyre size. For example 195/55 R15 '91H' is the loads and speed rating.

On a 4 x 4 it can be 101H or 111S etc etc etc. There are so many different combinations its unreal.

If you have any specific questions, PM me. My dad has done this job for 40+ years and we also have a fantastic team of 4 lads who have loads of experience too.

It is a good idea to date the tyres but some not so honest garages have started to push people into buying tyres as they are supposedly out of date.
