I had a word with a local police officer about it, he was under the impression that the vests do indeed imply that you are 'maybe' a police officer, therefore it could be argued that you were trying to impersonate one! It could be upheld in a court of law, and the law as we know, can be an ass.....
He suggested I stick to my beacon-type stuff I wear already!
My OH is a copper and he thinks those tabards are brilliant. He even offered to buy me one...
He reckoned that if you were going at such a speed you mistook it for a police tabard and police horse then you were going too fast
I also believe that the manufacturer of those tabards has cleared their use with the police
Incidentally, it may not be the case that an insurance company won't cover you in the case of an accident if you weren't wearing hi-viz, but that any compensation or insurance payout would be reduced as you may be viewed as being contributory negligent by not wearing hi-viz. It is my understanding that in the event of a car accident your damages can be reduced if you were not wearing a seatbelt and wearing one would have meant your injuries were lesser. I imagine the same applies to hi-viz in the event of an accident, and that is what people mean.
