H's premier equine merino wool half pad is in need of a wash, how do I best go about this?

Any recommendations for wool washes?

I'm worried about washing it, as as soon as I washed one of the Shires fake sheepskin ones he used to have, the fluff went all congealed so to speak. How do I keep the wool all soft and as it is at present?

Melp is brilliant I always use it now they just look so much cleaner and nicer, normal washing stuff just doesn't do the the job half as well, it's not expensive I think £13 a bottle I brush mine if they get sweaty so I dont wash them all the time so a bottle lasts ages.

I brush dirt out a few times until washing unavoidable

I use economy human hair conditioner. And machine wash on 30 degrees.

I dry flat snd not over heat. When fully dry I fluff back up with metal sheepskin brush.

I wash Mine on a wool cycle with any wool/delicates detergent, dry over the Aga rail and brush out with a plastic curry comb. All my Griffin Numed half wool numnahs last for decades.

I will state again, how you treat it depends on if it's wool (Nuumed etc) or sheepskin (leather base), most people aren't really aware of what they're buying and they're very different in how they work, and the care they need.

Dry slowly, especially sheepskin. I wonder if even laying it out in summer sun might be a bit fast for sheepskin/leather. Maybe lay it over something in the shade, or dry inside? I'll be honest and say I'm not sure. Definitely not too close to a radiator or fire the rest of the year.

The link I posted to the C7 wash has some washing advice and explicitly says not to dry in the sunshine.

I have a similar pad and use the wool cycle with a non bio wash, then brush with the dog slicker brush to tease out the wool. I don't wash often, usually a good brush with a magic brush gets the worst of any scurf off.

I slather my Nuumed saddle pad with integrated wool half pad in conditioner put in the wash on 30 degrees with a Nuumed detergent then air dry. Then I spray with mane detangler and brush out with a dog brush.

Conditioner and brushing, especially when wet, would be recommended against by many brands - check the makers recommendations otherwise you'll invalidate any warranty. Mattes used to recommend against washing too often, they have switched and now recommend more regular washing (maybe once a week if you use it 5-6 times).
