Sooo how are we washing saddle pads? What are we washing them in and arw we using our own machines? Andddd is there something we can add in with them/put them in that gathers/catches the hair?

I always give the insides of the pads a good brush with a stiff bristle brush to get most of the hair out before they go anywhere near the washing machine. In the summer rather than doing a full wash every time I sometimes just brush and hang inside out on the line in the sun. Obviously if they're really sweat soaked they get washed.

I don't do anything special with the machine, just clean the seals and the trap occasionally.

The other day I bought some of those pimple grooming gloves, they have rubbery palms and are designed to massage/groom a horse. I accidentally found that are really pretty good as de-hair-ing (!) saddle pads!

This time of year I use one of those hair scrapers meant for carpets and upholstery. Then the HAIR BAG. And.. Daz??? I think? Whatever is on offer.

I skipped the hair bag a few months ago as the pad looked to have basically no hair on it. MISTAKE. BIG MISTAKE.

The wee Magic Gloves? Happy days will stock up on a few pairs of these!

Mine go to the rug wash lady. I can wash them at home, but drying's a pain! £3 a pad, washed, dried & returned to me.
Thats really good value for the rug wash lady- not sure how much ours is but she keeps things for months and months which is fine for rugs May - Sept, less fine for saddle pads (I dont need encouragement to buy any more lol)

I put mine in the washing machine (North american front load) without a washing bag, on cold with a gentle detergent. I try to save up so I have 2-4 pads, so it's a bit more balanced.

I add two of these "fur zapper" things, which do a marvellous job getting the hair to... disappear?? I guess??

If it's really bad I will vacuum first. Sometimes I run them through the washer twice. I also try to make the next load one that doesn't matter if it gets a couple of hairs on - work clothes or rags or something. I can get away with putting whatever I want in the machine because my partner's pants often have plaster or even concrete stuck to them, and I've more than once pulled a drill bit out after a wash, so....

Then hang to dry.

I just wang them in the machine. I do brush the worst off first.

I them briefly wipe the drum and door seal.

I then wash my stable jacket or dog jackets, or something else that doesn't matter if it is hairy.

I them wipe the machine and empty the filter.

I would not then wash a going out outfit, but normal clothes would be fine.

I was in trouble with the better half last summer when I put a lightweight stable rug in the washing machine in the usual wash bag, but I must have put way too much washing liquid in.
The pressure of the bubbles and water and the rug meant it couldn't drain and there was bubbles and water spilling out of the drawer at the top flooding our kitchen floor.

If anyone remembers the Ladybird book The Magic Porridge Pot, it reminded me of that!.

Back to subject! I use a (small amount) of shops own brand non bio liquid and a wash bag.

No not magic gloves, I’ll find a link

Then in the washing machine when OH is out.

This with smol non bio on 30 degrees higher is proper grubby.

I also have the Moorland rider wash bag, medium size I think, and shake hair out of that at the end.
Also good for dog blankets.
You can buy it from various places - think I got mine from viovet.

I remember the Magic Porridge Pot 😄

I have a wash bag, a big one I got on ebay. Mostly I use it to wash the liners from the guinea pigs' house but it's been used for horse stuff too. It's quite good at keeping hair & hay from being loose in the machine.

I just bung them in with my clothes 😅 but between horses and cats everything I own/wear is hairy anyway.
I do clean the filter of the machine on a semi regular basis, as it does get a bit grim otherwise.

I don’t like using the wash bags as the hair gets trapped in the bag and then transfers back into the pad.
I just wash with non bio pods and then run a hair dissolver wash after

I just use a rubber curry comb to remove 98% of the hair then a quick dandy brush whilst at the yard then bung in my normal machine. I’ve never had any blockages. If I’m worried about straggling hair I put on a yard clothes wash as a next wash before going whites or work non yard clothes. The dogs hair is worse though!
