watching crufts?

I did... it was a very fetching shade of blue though:p

Goya I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets all emotional:o As for that smarmy one - maybe we could get a schutzhund type in to get a bite on him:p

No expert at all, but I was disappointed at the GSP. Didn't look happy. Will rewind later and look again (and also at the HWV lead! ;) )

The GSP in the workers showing bit reminded me of my Harley a lot though! It was a total woose when it came in the ring and everyone clapped.... Tail went straight between it's legs. Poor thing.

Re the vet in scrubs, did he have a crystal ball? Or a mobile x-ray machine? So he could tell whether the 'at risk' breeds have HD? :p

I didn't see one, but they were quite baggy scrubs, so he may have had such a thing secreted about his person. SEND IN THE SNIFFER DOGS!:D

Was the weim with the god awful lead ;) The GSP was disappointing I agree. Its a little shameful with all the bad press show dogs have got in the past few years to be taking a lame dog infront of the tv cameras!

I loved Merlin in the friends for life.
Was the vet not one of the show vets?

The commentators passed it off as a tired dog/not behaving. Doubt many joe blogs will notice....

The vet has x ray eyes obviously CC! Will be really interesting to see what they say about the GSD tomorrow, think it will probably be bad for my blood pressure.

Maybe they should look at their hipscore results and any other known genetic conditions before they are allowed to compete at all...let alone be on the tv as a 'marker' of the breed in the group

We doooooooooo :D :p :p you can't enter our top class without a low hipscore and a working qualification (certificates presented before dog enters ring and is ID checked to stop dogs being swapped).
But we don't get the support and we don't get the entries we should sadly.

Just a question, does spookiness in the ring disturb anyone else? I know it's a big arena and all but if a dog shrinks or seems scared in our shows, it is either placed down the line or excused, we do favour character above most other things.

Were any of them spooky? I didnt really notice that.

I'm not watching right now but I have watched in previous years, I mean dogs leaning away from the judge, cringing/sinking, ears back, that sort of thing.
Maybe I am just over-sensitive about that sort of thing but it's not something I like to see.

Every year there seem to be a lot of spooky dogs in the big ring, whilst it may be excusable in some breeds I would have thought gundogs should be able to cope with a bit of atmosphere.
Vizzy, GSD folk have been trying to persuade the KC to do that for years, as CC says some of the Sieger type shows over her do just that. Lets face it if KC won't even ask for a low score for breeding they are hardly likely to do it for the show ring.

The HWV (I think) wasn't at all happy at the judge going over her, tail between legs and shot away at one point. :(

The fact the IWS didn't hit the deck at anything says a lot about it's character, probably not perfect by other breeds standards, but for an IWS it was good :D

you would think he would notice a lame dog or two going into the group though!
I wish we did CC. Its a total farce and asks for trouble like the pedigree dogs exposed thingy. It makes sense, how can you have a dog represented as the best of its breed, picked from hundreds of dogs, when its not even breeding quality  Ridiculous.

I think it depends on breed but excessive anxiety isnt good to see with any of them. :(

Sometimes I feel like we (I shall use that as a collective term for 'progressive' GSD people) get treated like whackjobs and 'you're taking it too seriously, you're going too far, you're penalising people who show for fun' and then the breed takes a hammering because 'unhealthy' dogs are being promoted.

Three GSDs have won BiS at Crufts - all three produced health problems in their progeny - but they looked good 'on the outside'.

Sorry to start this debate AGAIN :p but is it a show, to run around and win prizes, or is it a breed selection tool, promoting dogs that look great but are also healthy on the inside too, mentally and physically? And can reproduce that?

did noone else notice the god awful lead?!

With the clip?

Tha GSP was very lame. :(

I was gutted the girl showing the Springer ran him up on the wrong side. Hope the owner gives her a good telling off. Such a silly error.

I know DFS are sponsoring but must they then call if DFS Crufts? Bit OTT!

Wetting myself at Zak prancing around and barking at the fat lab-clearly he didn't approve either!

I spent several weeks trying to figure out what the DFS acronym stood for...

Doggy Federal Society?
Dog Fancier Show?
Dog Fantastic Show?
Don't Feckup Show?

Wasn't until I eventually saw a 'sponsored by DFS' ad that it clicked. :o

Discount Furniture Sales :p

See I understand that fine when some mental bloke is screeching at me from the telly about 0% interest for two years.... Stick it in front the title of a dog show and I just don't make the connection :o It's all 'DFS what? Did the KC change it's name? What? What is happening? I'm confused! Where's my wine?!'

As I recall, when there was all the Pedigree Dogs Exposed furore Pedigree Chum who used to sponsor Crufts, got old feet and backed out, and good old KC were desperate for a new sponsor. I have no idea why they decided DFS (never knew what it stood for actually) was suitable, maybe because dogs like to either chew or get on furniture.:D

I have just started watching last nights crufts (I love sky+!)

I need a lab in my life!

The friends for life dogs have made Betsy look utterly crap! I asked her to bring me something, anything (we have been working on hide and seek type stuff - I am not expecting miracles) she pinged around the room for 30 seconds, sat, gave me paw and lay down then looked at her toy and flopped onto the sunny spot on the floor and sighed. Obviously the excitement was far too much for her lazy little brain.

I have decided to give agility a go with B (We have an enclosed arena and full set of agility gear at work:p), it looks like so much fun :D
