Waterproofing a dog collar?

So I’ve bought my dog a red leather collar for Christmas but then saw that it’s not suitable for light coloured dogs as the colour may run - he’s a Dalmatian Now I don’t know if they just have to disclose that due to the fact it could happen or maybe it is really likely to run. My question is can’t I just put something on it to waterproof it like we do tack? Whether it be saddle soap or something else?

Must be non toxic though and preferably something natural, I’m extra careful as he has ideopathic epilepsy.

All I can think of is something like Flexalan or Hydrophane - but that may also change the colour. Maybe a spare collar for wet weather.
