So I’ve bought my dog a red leather collar for Christmas but then saw that it’s not suitable for light coloured dogs as the colour may run - he’s a Dalmatian 🙈 Now I don’t know if they just have to disclose that due to the fact it could happen or maybe it is really likely to run. My question is can’t I just put something on it to waterproof it like we do tack? Whether it be saddle soap or something else?

Must be non toxic though and preferably something natural, I’m extra careful as he has ideopathic epilepsy.

Thank you 😊

Hopefully. I notice though a lot of things have a disclaimer about colour transfer and dyes. I only ever noticed that when I got a grey horse but assume it’s always been a warning.
I *think dubbin would give a bit of a barrier though.

Why not ask the dog's owner what type of collar she would prefer?

Thank you sbloom, cheques in the post. My leather conditioner would probably seal it but might darken it down so I would avoid it.
We use resoline to seal lighter leathers if the dye might leach out but it can leave it shiny (but not always) but it is acrylic and no nasty chemicals in it.

I've added a link so you can see the product I have mentioned.

Resoline, you'll need neutral https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fiebings-Acrylic-Resolene-Dye-Finish/dp/B008ROOKIO?th=1
Hope that helps, Oz
