Took Gyp and Hattie out riding and leading for a quiet walk down the road, about a mile. Only it wasn't quiet, there had been an accident on the main road (I found out when I go home) and the cars were using this normally quiet country lane as a rat run. 36 vehicles past me in the 20mins it took me to do 2 miles. 18 I pulled over for, 6 of which thanked me. Only 6. The other 18 had to slow down or stop for me, I was riding and leading so was as wide as a car in narrow country lanes. I thanked every one of those cars, 10 acknowledged me, 7 didn't even look at me, 1 of which very nearly if not did hit Hattie with his wing mirror and 1 hurled abuse at me.
Why do I, the one who uses these lanes everyday have to be the one shoved in the hedge and abused just because they are impatient and have to rush home. I wouldn't mind if they thanked me and drove slowly round our numerous blind bends.
Letters are going to be sent to the local papers, I am sick of this.

well done i dont blame you!!! when the villagers drive past us they smile and thank us and slow down etc but since the new houses have been built all these city workers and chavs just drive at us until we move i was leading 2horses the other day and a woman in a sports car with child slams breaks on rev's engine, overtakes almost hitting the horse on the outside the sticks her middle fingers up at me!!!! it's a joke!!!!

I did count. We must have about 1 accident every month, I am sick of cars using the lanes as rat runs, they are bl**dy dangerous.

Irishcobs - you have my full sympathy.

CH_ktdazzle - what a prime specimen of lovely chav mum you encountered. I'm so grateful my mother isn't like that!

When I drive past something that is NOT an angry commuter, whether it is a horse, tandem bike, hot air balloon, vintage car - I find it interesting and entertaining to see something else for a change. Horses are a bit of culture and even if people have no interest in riding I find it odd how they care neither about other people's health and safety, the culture/tradition aspect of horses in this country, or simply that it makes the lane a little bit less dull than usual...

There are some very worrying drivers out there, it really is frightening riding some places, some are just breath taking the way the behave, you have my full sympathy on the matter

I think a letter would be a very good idea. I decided to hack out at 5pm tonight, stupid idea really to go out at rush hour, in two short stretches of narrow road I managed to meet two motorbikes, a large horsebox, a tractor, more cars than I can count and a really ignorant landrover pulling a horsebox/cattle truck. the landrover would not wait but sat right on our tail until we could get in through a gate even though we trotted to get to the gate. They didn't hang back but were so close that Daisy was really panicked, literally jumped into the field when we could pull off the road and then went flat out across the field in a blind panic. You would think that somebody pulling what was either a horsebox or trailer (wasn't the moment to turn round and look) would know better. I really think they should change the speed limit or put up access only signs on narrow lanes because its just dangerous when people are too rushed to just add 2 mins to their journey by passing nicely

I am just glad my horses are safe in traffic and that there were no children about, either riding or walking.

My god where you ok? Not nice, poor Daisy.
I agree the speed limit should be changed, its not safe to drive any faster than 30mph on these lanes.

Problem with Daisy is that I've only had her just over a year, had never done anything before I got her. We'd got to the stage where we could hack out in traffic on our own and then she had two months off with a tendon injury. It seems to have brought her right back to the start again with traffic, she doesn't mind cars but anything out of the ordinary makes her abit skitty and this idiot didn't have the common sense to hang back until we could get off the road with his empty trailer rattling about behind him to scare her. I'm fine, thankfully I have a seat like glue. I let her go a couple of strides before brining her round to the right which took her sharply up the hill. Thanfully the hill took the energy out of her so she didn't manage to bolt too far. She's not supposed to be cantering yet but she seems fine. I hosed her leg off when we got back and there's no obvious swelling or anything. She was just really scared for the rest of the hack and leaped about whenever anything else went past other than a car thinking that it might threaten her again.

Oh no, how horrible, poor Daisy. Horses don't understand these people are idiots. Hope it hasn't set her back too far and she hasn't done any more damage to her leg.
