After nearly 12 months of on-off lameness, lami, the occasional seizures and constant vet and farrier visits
AND 5 weeks waiting for test results (!!!) we finally have an answer.
My p/l mare has Cushings.

In a way it's good news - we know now what's causing all the problems and how we can control it....but it doesn't stop it being a horrible disease.
We're trying to stay positive - she is very bright lately, VERY vocal (lol) and is desperate to get out of her stable - the vet has said not to force her but we're to let her wander out of her stable if she likes :)
I've been away at uni so I can't wait to get to the yard tomorrow and see how she is - she'll have been on Pergolide for a week and a half by tomorrow.

That must be a relief. I always think the worst bit about having an ill/lame horse is not knowing whats wrong and feeling helpless. At least you now have something to treat.

I have cushings, the drugs make a huge difference - OK so I will get an operation but they really do help and it is the same in horses and humans!! From a horsey perspective at least now you know what it is you can treat it apropriatley which is great :)

Thank you guys :)
I am relieved in a way. We were heartbroken when we found out it could be Cushings but it seems the lesser of two evils now and like you said at least we can control it. There is another horse on the yard who is early 30s with Cushings and has had it for years now - last winter, he escaped from his stable and was found playing in the WH field jumping the fences! (he is fully retired now!) I have heard from plenty of lovely HHO-ers who have horses with Cushings who are doing fine with the meds.
So there is plenty of hope, and she is such a fighter and has been through so much already.
Hopefully, this will be the start of a more balanced and happier year for us all.
