Today I hacked Charlie out on his own. Nothing much for some but 6 months ago he wouldn't even go 50 yards.
We had Kissing Spine surgery in Oct 12 prior to this he had gone from perfect hack to almost unrideable. Following his rehab and lunging I discovered he still thought hacking would hurt so we went back to basics where even leaving the yard and coming in the second gate was an achievement. We have taken it slowly and have a way to go yet but we hacked an Hour and a Half he was happy to the point of perky and I didn't have to say good boy every few yards we just hacked.
Pre op this ride caused him to panic every time we stopped for a car. Post op riding I had to get off and lead him the whole hack and that was with company patience time more patience and more time and we have a happy horse.

Thank you all. This horse has taught me so much. He is a very special chap luckily when he was diagnosed i had only owned him for 7 months we were just getting it together.
it was only two processes touching and I was totally ignorant of the length of our journey and that he would carry hang ups post op. I stupidly thought the op would fix everything. So now I carry the Huge responsibility of his trust in me to protect him from danger.

I'm so pleased for you, you and he have had quite a journey :) Must be the best feeling in the world. I've had a naughty napper in the past and know what it's like when you achieve a solo hack together and all goes well - utter magic :)

You must feel on top of the world. We managed to hack back to the yard alone down a stretch of mainish road and back road and remained intact and I felt fabby!!!

Must be amazing to have gone out for an hour and a half alone - WELL DONE!!!

Well done to both of you :) I myself have a seriously chronic napper and stressy mare and we still have a massively long journey ahead of us! However we have just moved yards with a much quieter road outside and the woods only 2mins away plus the option to hack the fields so fingers crossed my confidence am hers can start to be on the right track up :)

Well done OP. I lost all my confidence only with hacking (everything else / competing etc. no problem), years ago when I had one too many incidents (horse bolted with me twice along the road due to cows spooking him). I just gave up hacking completely and simply schooled instead at home. However I got a new horse in the winter who I was told is good to hack, so I have finally plucked up the courage to start hacking again (after about 10 years!). The horse is amazing, he hasn't put a foot wrong but I can still only make it 5 mins down the road to the field with cows in :( I just cannot force myself to ride past, Im terrified he'll bolt even though he's never ever done anything bad. So annoying, as I have to go past them, there's no other routes. I'm working up to it... AGH BLOODY COWS! Think I might try leading past them a few times, just to get it into my head that he won't go nuts like my other horse used to!

Sorry you are too far away having gone through the zone I would have walked it with you. Do you have a good friend who will walk out with you.
I applaud my DIY yard as several girls have taught me get off and lead past is good. In fact I said to someone the other day 'I Sarah'd it'. She has a warm blood who had lameness issues and Sarah walked absolutely blooming miles with her mare getting her right.
