Weekend plans :D

Needless to say, as I suspected it poured all day today, so we took the dog for a walk, had some lunch, and eventually got to hack out just before dark...

My new acavallo safety stirrups are awesome though...

Enviously read all your reports as still sidelined with my knee injury but thank goodness its not as bad as i feared, partial dislocation of the patella which has torn a tendon, I should be back in the saddle in a couple of weeks as it seems to be healing well, so only a month off. Rose has had a bit of a holiday but got ridden three times at the end of the last week by pro riders. I had to knock the chimp off my shoulder that kept telling me that "she's too good for you!" as she is looking awesome but not push button.
I loved the pic of Boggle and the cows, and can't wait to hear about AE's new purchase, fingers crossed the vetting goes well. Sorry to hear that others have injuries both human and horse related, it is such a PITA and I am so bored as everything I enjoy doing is an unsuitable activity but I can iron and cook whilst listening to the radio so I am utterly sick of politics!!

We did nothing too exciting but did some more exploring, and I continue to be amazed by the hacking we have .

It's like being on holiday!

Loveee looking at everyones photos and stories from their weekend. :D Thanks for sharing!

I haven't received the photos yet.. (sorry, text post!) but we went on a funride with a friend which was great fun! It was going to be super busy, 800 riders pre booked so went really early. Friends horse is pretty wild, her second funride and my friend was super nervous. She went in a stronger bit, a pelham but long story short, I said I'd look after her. My gelding has done quite a few funrides.. hes usually a complete diamond but hasn't done a funride since hes had his op in February this year.

Well mine was completely on his toes, trotting sideways and on the spot, acted like a stallion with his presence and one lady questioned if he was! Yet when it came to a open field he would happily canter with no contact, which amazes me as walking he was so silly but ask for a trot or canter, well mannered even with horses galloping past so can't complain at that. Jumped a few jumps lovely even when horses in front were running out so was really pleased with that.

Had a small commotion. A ladies horse in front decided to suddenly roll (with her on it!) in the middle of a field randomly. She managed to get off but was thick in mud, it then started violently kicking out at the owner and her friends horse, then got its bridle off and wrapped around its leg. It then rolled again, and again and again but no one could get near it as it would get up kicking like mad and galloping around. We all stopped, about 40 of us to wait for them to catch it without getting kicked in the head. Luckily it didn't gallop away (must of been at least a 300 acre field) Felt so awful for the rider.

My gelding then decided he'd had enough of waiting, and showed everyone his belly and did a couple of lovely hand stands (can not stand rearing, he has never reared or bucked in his life and I backed him as a 4yr old 4 years ago!) grrr. Thankfully said friends (usually wild) horse just stood there like a diamond! The poor lady eventually caught her horse and got back on all ok, the mud was so thick on her tack, bridle and horse.. definitely a hose pipe job! (part of me wonders why a horse would suddenly do that?!)

So apart from the hand stands in front of everyone and the jogging, oh and the ultra heavy rain (pants and bra got wet, through my waterproofs!) it was a lovely day!

Great weekend posts to read as always.

We actually went and did our first BE Intermediate this weekend - at Allerton Park. Amazing venue and event, our first visit. Not been particuarly nervous about a competition for a long time but I was about this one! Walking the XC course on Saturday added to this, there were quite a few tough questions where knew I had to get things right enough to give Phoenix a chance to do her thing as the fences were big enough not to have much margin for error. We stayed over Sat night as it is a fair drive away and we were on pretty early; we had lovely, generous and helpful hosts. Phoenix had a good night's rest and we did not....but that's the right way round!

Anyway, completely delighted with Phoenix, she was a total superstar, rose to the challenge and got better around the SJ fence by fence (the bigger height became her new normal around the course) and the same around the XC (remade her normal groove for the more difficult and bigger qns). She seemed to relish the extra challenge, she felt a little surprised by some of the 'blind' type XC questions but felt like she was then looking even harder for the next question. Dressage, she was calm, engaged and responsive and did everything in the right place - still need to work on the softness within a test to reproduce what we can do at home /in a lesson but very pleased with her. SJ we had more poles than normal for a variety of reasons but it felt a good round and well within her comfort range. XC, we jumped clear - so delighted with this over a pretty tough course :). I managed to get lost near the end of the course so our final score looks atrocious as I figured out the way back to the course and the next fence! I blame a few hours sleep Saturday as well as the level of concentration I'd had to apply up to that point in the day /course. Plus I lost my hat cover (as can see in the photos) but it was handed in and I got it back, which was much appreciated!

A few of the pro pics bought and paid for personal use (credit: Action Replay Photography Ltd.) - this horse is so special - her attitude is priceless and she is the most amazing athlete. Superstar  . Now I know I need to improve myself and develop her further, ready for next season.

For info: The first XC photo (2042) is over the fence at the top of a v steep slope and the 2nd XC photo (2045) is the fence at the bottom of the same v steep slope - hence our expressions(!) The final photo (8155) is on the approach to a pretty big picnic table which was the fence after one of the most difficult combinations where I had to give her time to figure it out and find her way through as the first fence of the two was off a blind, tight left turn with v little space in front of a pretty big narrow brush followed by a triple brush 4 strides later. But straight away she is looking and wanting the next question (the v big table in front of us (!)). She is so 'on it' all the way round a course - love this about her.

So weekend report

Saturday was busy, and tiring, went and bought a load of shavings which had to be loaded and unloaded, then sorted out some rugs and other equipment to either give or lend to my sister for her new horse. Then we drove up to collect the new boy. I was pretty nervous about the drive, it is further than I normally tow and up the motorway, plus the yard we were going to was tight and reversing the trailer sends me into a cold sweat.

We got there fine, and I reversed into their yard through a very narrow gap like an absolute pro. I was feeling quite smug until the sellers husband said that he had reversed an artic through the same gap - oh well I was pleased with myself, not that long ago I would have handed the keys over to anyone else willing to do it or unhitched.

New boy loaded ok for saying we don't think he has ever been on a trailer before, banged a bit when we shut him in so I was worried he was going to do that the whole journey but once we got moving a travelled brilliantly, didn't hear a peep from him at all.

He was pretty hot when we arrived at her yard so the first thing he did when he got into his new stable was have a big roll. This of course destroyed the huge and beautifully neat bed that my nephew had put down for him! Oops. He settled in really quickly and was chilling out with his haynet within a couple of minutes even though it is quite a busy yard. Then a bit later he went out in the field, he walked out to the field very sensibly despite it being quite a long walk with lots of potential for spookiness.

I got back late, but the gods of trailer reversing continued to smile on me and I reversed into my parking spot first time with virtually no shunting. Typically there was no one around to witness this!! As it was late my mare didn't get ridden.

Sunday dawned wet and miserable, I was VERY tempted not to go hunting, especially as I would have to go alone. But it is a nice meet and nearby so I had a word with myself and went anyway. In fact the weather cleared by the time I got to the meet. Parked up next to a lady who I hadn't met before but who had a bottle of prosecco open so we made friends quickly!!!

Had a lovely afternoon hunting and the weather stayed dry until the last hour. My mare was rather fresh having had a quieter than usual week. By her usual standards she was a bit of a handful but she's normally an angel so she still managed to have someone comment on how good she was! We had to have a few conversations about who was in charge of deciding the speed but that was all. Unfortunately we did get drenched towards the end, but it was still fairly warm so not too miserable.

Took me quite a while to get sorted back at the yard, horse was sweaty and muddy so needed a bath but also needed to dry enough to have a turnout rug on. I had a mountain of wet tack and boots etc to clean too, and my reversing luck had run out, after what felt like a million shunts to get parked I ended up having to straighten it up after I had unhitched.

Finished off with a phone chat to my sister about how the new boy was settling in, apparently he was an angel on Sunday too, they had managed to borrow a reasonably suitable saddle so my nephew rode and was able to take him in an indoor school for the first time. Hopefully he keeps up the sensible behaviour!!

I have tried to upload a picture of the new boy but keep getting errors - sorry and no hunting photos as I was all alone and my tweed doesn't have big enough pockets for my phone

I need a week at work to recover now but I've got a lesson booked tonight!

Saturday I ended up taking my 5yo to her first jump lesson, she took to it like a duck to water and thoroughly enjoyed every second evidenced with the occasional buck and squeal after the fences. Very pleased with her confidence considering she has never left the ground before. I couldn't stop grinning from ear to ear the whole lesson. I think she will be a very talented jumping horse as she certainly gave the poles some air and made a beautiful shape over the fences.
She can be really scatty and spooky on the ground but she is incredibly bold and brave under saddle, my instructors coat started blowing away in front of the jump she gave it a good look but carried on jumping anyway with her ears pricked right up. Bless her.

Didn't post about it at the time but a couple of weeks ago I took her to a xc course for some groundwork where she met ditches, water and steps for the first time. I was expecting some drama but she was in typical Osi mode and just got on with the job.

I just love her! Such a little future superstar.

Then Sunday was Blenheim. It was a beautiful sunny morning while we were in the covered seating watching the lower placed riders SJ, the moment we went out to walk the xc course however the heavens opened - typical! It was a fab day regardless and massive congrats to Piggy what a great year she is having.

I had a good lesson on Saturday, mainly working on getting more air time in the paces, and getting him to stay relaxed through his back and not brace against me. It was very interesting as he will soften outside of circles but will often try the head up and running technique! We have much to work on, but hopefully going in the right direction. I guess we will see on Sunday!!
We also had a great canter session on Sunday, when he did drop his head and use his back end better.
I am getting him a new saddle, I have had no end of trouble fitting one to him so it will be interesting to see if it makes a difference.
Yesterday he had the mctimoney lady again, and he was a bit crooked. I think the bracing makes him worse, plus for a small pony he is actually doing quite a lot, and does seem to need a lot of maintenance!!

Really enjoyed reading how everyone got on.

FH - that sounds like an eventful day! Almost sounds like a spot of colic from the other horse if it was that agitated?

Scampi - that sounds amazing and what a lovely feeling that must be. Your horse sounds like a fab eventer.

Kat - new horse not for you though? Well done on the trailer reversing too even if it didn’t last! Shame about the rain. Have some hound exercise in mind for Oct and hoping my tweed still fits!

No not for me, he's gorgeous but I have neither the time or money for a second! He's for my sister and her son to share, he's being an absolute star so far. I am so relieved, he's been in the school twice now and other than a slightly over enthusiastic canter transition he's been a gem.

As for tweeds, I'm sure they shrink ;) I could really do with a bit more bosom room in mine but I am not buying another! I'm just looking forwards to full season hunting because my hunt coat is much more spacious!

We had a fab lesson with Charlie Hutton now Monday - I hurt in places I didn’t know existed after 🙈
Already looking forwards to my next one.

Just off Madame after an interesting jumping lesson. BN is getting a little small now but until today we hadn’t gone above 1.05m so we went a little bigger. She was super 🥰

Very late to this thread! I've been incredibly busy with work and life but enjoyed reading the fun everyone has been up to. Last Sunday Chill and I headed for our first hunter trial. Just the 75cm class and we didn't jump the joker fence but she absolutely flew! The commentator complimented our pink matchy haha! So pleased as a couple of months ago I never thought I'd have the confidence to jump again.

Flying round:

Disbelief that we'd managed to do it! Though Chilli really took me round...
