Getting in early!

Quiet weekend again here, not working (for once!). Going to attempt to bring E the TB back into light work before she sees a lameness specialist in a few weeks. Hopefully it can pinpoint where she may not be right. Fingers crossed she's all good after a year off though! Can't deny that she looks amazing, for a TB in drought!

I hope I can get her right, she's a lovely horse.

L has had a week off so we might venture to the indoor to consolidate some schooling after a couple of weeks of hacking :)

The bushfires are still bad here, more have been started by dry lightning and the forecast is rather catastrophic with no rain forecast and even the monsoons are very late, so no chances of cyclones to bring something to the land. It's now likely a case of when rather than if our surroundings are threatened, so brushing up on evacuation plans all the time. Unfortunately we can't rely on the authorities to help, there are simply not enough resources to help everyone. The map attached shows the extent of the fires across the state as of yesterday o_O

Therefore obligatory wet and cold pictures are super welcome. Have a great weekend all :D

It's starting to get that way here to Northern! I'm already sick of the hot, dry weather and our forecast has been in the 40's, although we get a brief reprieve over the weekend before it heads back to the 40s next week. YUCK.

Hope you chestnut is ok!

We are staying home and plan on having a jump and making the most of the cooler weather. Gardening on the cards and generally doing outside jobs getting ready for Christmas.

Have fun all. Would happily trade the heat for the cold and wet right now...

Northern, is she an ex racehorse TB? Hope all goes well with her and the fires get under control. Hopefully more racing this weekend, Tingle Creek at Sandown. Did think about entering some dressage but not in competition mojo at present. Think we got our qualifications done in December last year but think still recovering from a busy September (I know that was a long time ago!).

Sending cool rainy thoughts to those of you on the other side of the world ;)

We went for a lesson this morning. Darcy on good behaviour today, had a good laugh with my trainer that we've brought him up from about minus 100 on the dressage horse scale, to zero now - he's ready to start learning and he's strong enough to do proper work :p
Best thing he did today was eat his haynet while he was standing on the box waiting to be tacked up. It's the little things ;) that's the first time he's eaten anything before he has done his work.

He got to wear Millie's nice thermatex today instead of the pleb-rug for horses that can't be trusted :D

We have a show on Sunday at a new-to-us venue. Hopefully it will be a bit quieter than last week's attempt! Nice short journey to a venue that recently got BD accreditation so he can hopefully go there affiliated next year.

Good luck milliepops x x I hope this venue has an easier layout for you?? I didn't get to mention last week because I was away, but I was disgusted on your behalf that nobody helped you at your last show, or even offered if they could assist. If I were at a show with OH or child, and someone was having difficulty with a youngster, I would total have offered to lead, or to open a gate, or to have held a horse while his rider tacked him up.

In other news, F, OH and I had a lovely weekend in London (despite terror activities) and visited Tower of London and British Museum as well as Londone Eye, open bus tour, and Hamleys/Waterstones.

We collected all the animals on Monday after their hols, and all well (including the small pony who had spent a week pretending she was a princess among all the posh big horses at the water treadmill rehab/livery yard.

Unfortunately my dressage lesson last night was cancelled (due to norovirus) at less than an hours notice, so I travelled to the venue :( Big waste of my time :(

Undecided where to go this weekend, as so much on, but I think probably WH on Sunday afternoon, as we haven't done any for ages.

Then collecting new pony next Thursday :)

Thanks Fiona x water under the bridge now but I'd like to think that I would also offer to help someone who looked like they had their hands full. Unfortunately experience shows that not everyone is like that! I reckon this one will be easier, they are running BD quest at the same time so there's bound to be helpful folk around.
Sorry about your lesson but sounds like you had an enjoyable break :)

Maybe its our eventing/PC background, but I'm always alert at shows for folk having difficulties, as I know how awkward it can be sometimes travelling and competing on your own.

Even running late when you're on your own, a helping hand for 5 min to hold the horse while you tack can make the difference between total stress, and a nice relaxing lesson or test.

Lesson today, flatwork clinic tomo, polework clinic Saturday, no plans for Sunday yet... Praying that I will get my arena soon so I can stop doing so much zipping about. The archaeologist has submitted our archaeological mitigation strategy to the council (they have decided that there might be a Saxon village under where I want the arena, although they had no such concerns 9 months ago when they turned down our initial application, so those Saxons have had a busy year) so everything crossed that I won't have to wait much longer!

Yep she is, though never officially raced. Much too slow. She has the nicest walk I’ve ever seen on a TB, so hopefully the rest will come with time and proper work after the vet has had a peek at her back end/SI area!

I am planning (if it's still on) to take Buzz hunting on Monday. Going with a friend, it'll be the first time I've taken him out, I think his owners said he'd been before but that would have been a while ago! I've been a few times on my old pony so it's not completely new. Going to take him in a Pelham though :) little bit nervous still!

However will have to see what he's like this weekend as he's started to walk away from me when I go to catch him so I don't know if he's just bored of all the boring hacking we've been doing (not many routes whilst the ground is boggy and struggling to get in the school) or he's feeling a bit off - although I have no other reason to think this, just being paranoid! Or that he's decided he doesn't like me anymore ha ha.

Fiona- must have missed this about a new pony. What you getting?

Quiet one here. Christmas Meal out tonight with a group of horsey friends- think there’s 12 of us going. Will ride this weekend if the weather stays decent.

Enjoy your night out :)

To be fair, its not a pony for me, its a pony for my 8yo, but we are excited because he has been asked to ride it and bring it on which is quite a compliment.....

Its an ex top show pony, who is now middle aged, but has never had an all round PC/jumping education, so we are going to have some fun with him hopefully :)

Chippers it's amazing how paranoid we become about our horses! Any little thing worries me, and as the human of a 23 year old very fragile accident prone Arab who loves nothing more than galloping around either with or without a rider I'm probably right to be! Said small grey mare is hopefully of to a short fun ride on Sunday. Will probably do the shorter distance, as although fairly fit, the last few weeks have been difficult for us. She was very cheerful out today, so it's all about getting her out, having fun and bringing her home sound.
I'm hoping to give Winnie her first canter since August tomorrow, so fingers crossed it goes ok.
Good luck everyone, I'm slightly horrified that no one helped you MP, people are stranger, and horsey people even more so!

Grrr, an RC lesson that child and I were both booked into ages ago with our favourite instructor nearly didn't happen, as the organiser forgot about us. Have managed to get a later time slot thankfully, but it's very late for an 8yo who already has a couple of other late nights booked in that week ??

December is hard enough to keep all the balls in the air ???

On Thursday I didnt have any plans, but by last night had hired closest arena and have just had a productive flat lesson. Started ok, middle bit was rubbish as my brain turned to mush, so esteemed trainer got on for 6 or 7 minutes and wow! Despite being part broken himself, he really got the right buttons going!
I then got on again and B was v impressive, a little renvers and travers and then finished off with something approaching a half decent canter circle!
Haven't had a pure flat lesson since Sept and by golly it showed, I've been just jollying about, need to pull my socks up and apply myself!

Hope everyone out training, competing or enjoying riding has a good weekend.

I've been show jumping at home today, getting ready for a little local competition next week. Pretty happy with how she's going now, I now feel like its way more me than her. Would love to put our little video on but can't figure out how.
Tomorrow I'm just going to go for a nice hack because I think we're both sick of seeing the dressage letters, especially by flood light.

Hoping to do a 60 and 70 class next week and a fun Christmas puissance, but just to have a go at jumping something different, we will probably only do a couple of rounds. I've just got to think of a costume (requirement of the class) that won't scare her so would appreciate any cheap suggestions from anyone.

Just back from Somerford farm ride with Amber and Dolly. That was fun! Did the full winter loop, keeping the pace fairly high - nice long canters, a few gallops, sticking to the lower fences to give the horses the experience of just running and jumping out of a forward canter, and generally having a lovely, stress free time

Got back to the lorry park to untack and neither Amber nor Dolly had broken a sweat. Not even around the girth. So that's good. Somehow despite injuries and poor weather they are both still pretty fit.

Well, the smoke is back and very thick so hiding inside and thinking of the poor horses out there. Hopefully it'll clear soon enough.

Took L to the indoor yesterday to do some proper canter work. It's difficult to find somewhere to do it at the moment, the ground is rock hard and our outdoor is 20 years old and has had nothing done to it in those 20 years, its slippery and unsafe to do anything more than trot on. The indoor isn't ideal either, the surface is very boggy but it's better than nothing! Picked the flattest bit and had a super ride. L hasn't been alone in there very often, so I was pleased she got on with it and concentrated on what I was asking.

L wasn't as impressed with doing a bit of sweaty work :D

Hope the new pony settles in well Fiona!

Lesson yesterday for Rooni, he was FAB. Real confidence break through for him past couple of weeks. I feel like we’re not out to a party for ages now, itching to go again already!

Then today Rooni has his proper solo big boys hack! He was a total dream from loading to getting home. I couldn’t be more thrilled with him.

And not to be left out, this fat fuzzy Fig went for a canter round the fields. I didn’t have it in me to box up to hack again and he didn’t need schooling. Loving the zero pressure with him!

All in all, a good weekend!

Hurrah, OH came with us today but we probably would have coped by ourselves, other than being parked so close together that you couldn't tie up outside the lorry.
New venue for us both and I think we will be returning, Darcy was a little bit looky but did his work as requested and soaked it all up nicely.
First time out plaited too :p bit messy because we arrived super early so he started taking them out on the lorry
