Late to the party as I had Covid and didn't think I would be allowed to go to a party, but I was negative Friday morning and again today so we made it to indoor XC training!

I am really please with baby horse. We have had 8 days of me just hacking, as that appears to be within the rules, with a mask, but had built up to 1 1/2 hours, with substantial trot and even a little canter. It translated today to much stronger work too.

Luckily I haven't been too ill with Covid, but 1st day back, to box out and do hard work, I feel like I have overdone it a bit. Steady day tomorrow I think. Rubbish photo, lifted from video.

Happy for all those who have been out and about. AE, so happy you are going to be out eventing soon!

Jumping in with more Haffy ears!

S.JPG

We've got a busy week coming up, with a lesson Tuesday and a clinic next weekend. Then consecutive competitions the two weekends after before we all collapse in a heap! We'll be attempting our first official Elementary so I hope we can show some improvement since we last did one (last year  ). We started introducing changes the other week which has blown the canter a bit, but she's quite smart so will get the hang of it soon I'm sure, just keep plugging away!

Can't believe we could potentially be out at Medium at the end of the year, crazy talk! I've never been the best dressage rider (pretty rubbish actually) and I was determined to get better. Happy to say the fluffy ex-broodmare and myself are well on our way!

Hope everyone else has had a great weekend :)

Well, I got my hacking in on Friday and yesterday, today we trundled off early o clock for unaff stressage champs. B unhappy in the working in area so was v glad I'd hopped on at home before 7 to work in the paddock for 20 mins hard labour. Wasnt too dreadful as managed a 6th in the intro B final, but tbh sj is more my bag.
However, B executed the test reasonably to get 63.034% and friend has kicked me to do some prelims next..... B is perfectly capable, but her mind can butterfly off v quickly lol....

Hope everyone's weekend is going their way x

Today was a baby jumping clinic for us and a really mixed bag - my position is improving no end after a long break and Alw is feeling much more confident and balanced working in an arena generally; we don't have one at home and have had issues with balance and straightness which show up when we work in a confined space. That was good. Rhythm and consistency were all over the shop though - with me panicking and not giving Alw enough time to sort herself out so bits of the clinic once we were jumping courses were a a lot bit ugly. I was feeling a bit down about it but instructor has given us a good plan and my sweet girl made nothing of all sorts of coloured jumps, wings and fillers that she has never seen before. She also gave everything plenty of air and in good style so there is stuff to look forward to. I just felt like I have no riding skills!! On the strength of that I have committed to an arena hire on a weekly basis, funds allowing so that we can do much more focussed flatwork. It is clearly hard work for my girl so hopefully more practice on a regular basis will help. And it will help no end with our dressage plan which is currently totally stalled. So not really uplifting but constructive with much to think about!! :)

Super jumping lesson. 90ish so hopefully the Northallerton course will look small. She is so much more rideable now, so instead of focusing on basic control I can actually ride her and start focusing on the quality of the canter etc.

She has a much prettier head than me so chopping mine off doesn;t matter.....

Hunter trial today was a semi-success! The most technical course we’ve ever jumped, with 4 combinations in a row (including a double of corners and 2 offset doubles), skinnies, tight turns and hills.

I was absolutely bricking it after walking it yesterday, and spent the morning worrying and thinking about pulling out. However Pepsi has clearly decided that XC is a very fun game indeed, and pulled me round like a steam train. Rather regretted leaving the bit on the snaffle ring, but at least he seems to be enjoying his job and getting the idea of XC!

One glance off at a big skinny log (though more because he was too busy arguing with me about slowing down for the turn) but once I got him back he popped it absolutely fine. We clearly need some more brakes now he’s getting the idea (up to now he’s been fine) or maybe he just needs the Dr and SJ first to tire him out!

Overall a positive day, but definitely showed what we need to work on!

Took Millie out for a hack first thing and she was as keen as ever.

Managed to catch a few hours over at my second family’s this afternoon, which was lovely. Me and my best friend met aged 3 and 4 (we are now headed to our late 30s!) so as you can imagine, I’m pretty much part of the furniture and her family have always treated me as their other daughter/granddaughter. Friend has kids now so I get to be the cool, slightly mad, Aunty!

Well the 6yo is looking fit, strong and very happy with life, which is great but didn’t quite align with what was needed in the dressage for his first event of the season ?? sticky bum breeches required and he will be experimenting with a double dressage warm up next time ? Jumped like a stag though with a big smile plastered across his face.

The two 3yos have continued to be angelic in pre-skool, Turnip should be sat on this week hopefully and then they will be done until later in the year.

As follow up to yesterday's post, here's horse grazing on the finest selection of dried crusty grasses and plants (his preference - don't ask me why) with the aforementioned houses being remodeled in the background. He was still quite alert today and not sure as to why one would want to redo their roofing and use flailing tarps.

Another horse came sideways trotting past the frightening home improvement project, also expressing his displeasure at such unannounced renovations. Due to the glacial...I mean...more relaxed approach people take to working around here, it could be like this for awhile...might be more spooky when it's done and the tarps aren't there!

Anyway, as you can tell, we're a bit...bored. With cross country being cancelled and no competitions within a 3 hour radius, in addition to clinics slowing down (since many clinicians compete on weekends themselves), we're just sort of hanging out. Still chipping away at various things when schooling though. Screenshot_20220320-174252_Gallery.jpg

Sig and I had a lovely weekend! ?

We've only just started back in regular work and have focused on building up a base of fitness with a lot of walking. Slowly increasing his trotting and cantering, and decided to take some footage to see how we look just starting back in work.

Finally got the Pivo functioning after 18 months, different app, new phone, and one motivational speech with a lot of rude words.

Have some things to work on myself, but overall thrilled with how he looks early on and trying to be kind to myself. I've been off most the winter too. ?

Then today we had a lovely hack just the two of us. Sig has confidently conquered the bridge over the busy dual carriageway and loves exploring. So grateful to have such a lovely weekend with my boy. ?❤

An extraordinarily long day at Lincolnshire for the BE Novice - but still having to pinch myself to check I'm not dreaming about how well it went!

34.5 dressage was the weak link of the three phases, but then we managed not to add anything else to it to finish 4th in a competitive section. Luck was with us when he clouted the 7th showjump and it magically stayed up though ?

Also, totally unheard of, we won eventing prize money!!

That’s brilliant! Very well done. He was still full of running at the end of the XC and taking on everything so confidently. A long winter paying dividends ?

Went with a friend o her lorry to another yard for a very windy hack out on Saturday, just a 45 min jaunt round some headlands and both horses were very good. Even walked over a tree trunk type log and then bunny hopped back over it. Then on Sunday we loaded up and went to a local gallops. It was rather challenging as they'd shut the main road and diversions were set up 10 miles away so it was tricky to figure out how to get there but we did. Must have been unusual having a western horse and a dressage horse on the gallops but Amber did her sensible companion role perfectly and we had a lovely time. The surface wasn't great for Amber it was very deep and soft but you couldn't move through it either so we took it steady.

He's such an easy horse to travel quickly on because he's not strong and he conserves his energy very well! I think the biggest difference I've made is doing much more HIIT fitness work myself though - I think I can stay with him and keep riding forwards better.

Well done RF! You're a lovely combination to watch.

Thank you - always trying our best not to look too numpty amateurish in front of the fancy pros!

Scraping into the end of this thread... we had a lesson today, whooo hooooo!
Quiz started out being thoroughly unreasonable, grew to 19 hands squealing and honk-snorting because other horses were in the arena, left the arena, and so on... He was lunged, then i was lunged on him, and then when he could keep his brain between his ears we were set free :p

Not for the faint hearted, this one, but he is going to be a fun horse when we get a bit of a partnership going o_O

hahaha he said that Kira was much worse behaved but I didn't mind that because I knew her. He is right, all the others have been pretty terrible for the first couple of months and I just push that out of my mind after we've got going so i forget the trauma!

He was actually very complementary... i've got myself a Proper Horse for once, he has tip top breeding for dressage (Jazz x Rubinstein) so ought to be able to do the job, has nice basic paces and good natural balance, and is very motivated ;) he just needs to learn to prioritise instructions from the rider rather than having his own agenda, let's just say... ;)

I'm so pleased for you MP, you deserve a lovely quality horse! It's odd how you can get used to a certain type of bad behaviour but a different horse can worry you - Chilli's far naughtier than Danny in many ways, but I was always more nervous of Danny's behaviour.

On the subject of Chilli, I'd been worried that something was going on behind as his hind feet have gone pretty funky looking, and our trimmer also thought there might be something going on higher up. I booked a local vet Chiro for last Friday but couldn't go due to my Covid, so a friend was there. She trotted up and lunged Chilli and apparently he looked horrendous - wouldn't go forward, looked lame on three legs - so she didn't do a Chiro treatment. In my Covid fog I couldn't really take it all in so booked my usual lameness vet today. Chilli was his usual forward, enthusiastic self so I'm really not sure what happened last week (same friend joined me today and said he was like a different horse). His back end looked fine but he's bilaterally lame in front, only when lunging on a hard surface, flexions all good and fine in a straight line and in the school. He's having x-rays on Friday then if I need to shoe for a while I will do, but I won't just stick shoes on to mask an issue so let's see. Fingers crossed it's something we can see and something minor!
