Since I wormed my boy with equest pramox on 28 feb he has dropped quite a lot of weight, but I’ve actually increased his feed and the grass is trying to come through…has anyone else seen a weird reaction to this wormer?

At least he's still alive. If you search, you will find many reports of equines being taken ill and colicking after worming with Pramox. I would think that you are out of the danger period by now, though.

Discuss it with your vet. Theses adverse reactions seem to be an open secret.

Yep - my friend's horse colicked badly after this wormer. The YO stopped using it.

I think I read somewhere on Facebook that one of the Cumbrian Heavy Horses died after being wormed with it.

I lost a horse to colic within 24 hours of worming with Pramox -coincidence? Maybe. The horse had been regularly wormed since birth and had had Pramox before.
However there will never be another Pramox in this yard. I now use Equitape or similar for tapeworm and other wormers as appropriate.

The problem with Pramox is you are giving a combination of actives that will always be harder on a horses well being.

OP please speak to your vet about it and try to ignore some of the comments and dont panic to much.

I have literally never heard of any issues with Pramox

If you google will fresh air kill me, It will tell you it will.

I've used it on all mine from disaster prone thoroughbreds to miniature shetlands and they're all happy, healthy and still alive with no side effects shows after administration

Just to offer some balance to this thread lol

Also from a balance perspective - we've used it 2 autumns in a row on between 40-60 horses. One got a very sweaty and I dosed her with 1/2 tube protexin quick fix. She was new on the yard that year so suspect she was carrying a bit if a worm burden. She was the only reaction.

All liveries on our yard are warned to get a worm count prior to worming with it. Most don't bother, but the vet did say that if she suspected a horse had a heavy worm burden then she would advise 5 day Panacur and then Equest pramox.

^^ agree.
I've used it several times on my oldie without a problem and know plenty of people that have...

That said I choose not to use it for my sec D because she has a tendency to pick up a higher worm burden and I prefer a phased approach with her.

I sat next to a rep for the company that makes this wormer on a train two years ago. She said even though she works for them, she would not advise using moxidectin and praziquantel at the same time. I've stopped using it. I now use moxidectin alone and praziquantel for tape with ivermectin because i don't think is available by itself?

can you not use equitape for tapes which is praziquantal on it's own?

We dont use moxidectin in combination with any other active even on the cattle as we have had reactions to it . Its ok on its own but its pretty potent!!

Equest Pramox combines both moxidectin (found in plain Equest) and Praziquantel (found in Equitape) in a single dose. Giving moxidectin as Equest and Praziquantel as Equitape separately at a suitable interval, (I leave a 14 day gap), is just as effective but seems to have fewer adverse reactions reported.

I mentioned my concerns re Pramox to an SQP at my usual supplier, which is the retail arm of a major mail order animal health company. She agreed that their clients have quite frequently reported equines colicking after being dosed with Pramox :eek3:. The percentages of affected equines will be low (well below 1%, I'm sure) but seeing as it is so easy to avoid the combined dose by giving the ingredients separately, to me it is a no brainer.

ETA OP, I hope that you managed to chat with your vet and that your horse is well.

Mine also coliced badly after being wormed with Pramox to the point where I thought I was going to lose her. I've not used it since.

I don't use Pramox due to hearing stories about problems with it, but judging on the info its safe for pasture but you should keep your horses off the pasture for 3 days after use, confused.com
The other ingredients used (Although probably small amounts) are:
butyl hydroxytoluene
benzyl alcohol

I wonder if there is a common denominator with the horses who react to Pramox, although heavy worm burden or not being 100% well prior to dosing would be suspect in some

Make sure you report any adverse reaction to the manufacturer!
Just call the number on the packaging. Don't rely on your vet to do it.
If you don't report the manufacturer won't know and all it is is hearsay. Even if you are not 100% certain they will look into it.
