...we have succeeded in breeding a mare today by AI without the help of any vets.
One of the maiden 4 year old WB's here is to be bred this year; she came into season through the week and I gauged that today was the day.....so owner ordered the semen, I ordered all the necessaries from my vet.
Unfortunately my vet was leaving for Europe today so couldn't come and ultrasound or inseminate.....so we all thought, what the heck, let's give a go.
Sedated the mare and waited for short while. Not too sure just how sedated she was as she didn't seem too doped up to me. Anyway I asked her to come into the stocks, which she did after a couple of minutes but wasn't convinced that she would be happy in there and boarder also felt that she wasn't going to enjoy being done in there. So we took her off to a stable. Asked her to stand - I had the head job; another boarder had tail duty; Megan was in charge of the semen and the other boarder was in charge of inseminating.
Boarder found the hymen immediately, moved it out of the way, introduced the pipette and attached syringe of semen.....voila!!
The mare was an absolute angel and so we now have our fingers crossed that there will be a tiny black dot on the ultrasound scan in a couple of weeks time. If there is, then the owner will have the cheapest AI breeding imaginable, LOL!!
So now I am off to celebrate! Even if it isn't successful......one never needs an excuse to celebrate! Well done to all ladies involved.
