...we have succeeded in breeding a mare today by AI without the help of any vets.

One of the maiden 4 year old WB's here is to be bred this year; she came into season through the week and I gauged that today was the day.....so owner ordered the semen, I ordered all the necessaries from my vet.

Unfortunately my vet was leaving for Europe today so couldn't come and ultrasound or inseminate.....so we all thought, what the heck, let's give a go.

Sedated the mare and waited for short while. Not too sure just how sedated she was as she didn't seem too doped up to me. Anyway I asked her to come into the stocks, which she did after a couple of minutes but wasn't convinced that she would be happy in there and boarder also felt that she wasn't going to enjoy being done in there. So we took her off to a stable. Asked her to stand - I had the head job; another boarder had tail duty; Megan was in charge of the semen and the other boarder was in charge of inseminating.

Boarder found the hymen immediately, moved it out of the way, introduced the pipette and attached syringe of semen.....voila!!

The mare was an absolute angel and so we now have our fingers crossed that there will be a tiny black dot on the ultrasound scan in a couple of weeks time. If there is, then the owner will have the cheapest AI breeding imaginable, LOL!!

So now I am off to celebrate! Even if it isn't successful......one never needs an excuse to celebrate! Well done to all ladies involved.

Brilliant well done. Fancy coming over and doing Hattie for me?
Can you still register the foal over there now? Reading about AIing over here they won't register the foal if the vet doesn't sign that the semen is from the chosen stallion and was correctly inseminated.

Good luck but i wish it was only that easy.
By the way in this country it is illegal to AI a mare unless suitably qualified.

That isnt strictly true.
Perphaps with europeans stallions but we dont expect a form to be signed and returned to issue a covering certificate.
But then all of our clients either send them to an insemination centre or vet goes out to do them at home.

Well done

Will be interesting to see the outcome...I have often considered using the chap who does the cows around this way..he is doing dozens in a day.

Bizarre in some respects that you need a qualified AI person or vet here for animals, but can impregnate yourself with a turkey baster with no skill at all (one for the Soap Box maybe)

Maybe thats what he meant I'm not sure. The vet said, when the semen is sent out, whether collected by me or posted. A form comes with it for the vet to sign saying that it semen was for the correct, intended mare and that it was inseminated correctly by the vet.

A horses internal conformation is differant to a cow or human.
With a horse you have to pass a catheter through the cervical barrier to inseminate where as with a cow you dont.

LOL!! I sort of cheated with this story.......some of my boarders are a little more than just your average horsey owner. She is qualified.

I do hope that this is successful; my vet thought it was pretty neat that we were all game for it.
