Welsh cob owners..

hahaah I was considering whether we could do some showing as K gets older but my conclusion was the same as yours :p Maybe in another 10 years ;)
 
I had the full on Welsh Dragon experience today :) Usually I just have a kettle sized dragon to contend with but today, having not had any turnout and having been asked to go for a quiet plod on her own my 4 year old was quite the thing! I have impressed all the neighbours with the security of my seat and frightened the local dogs too. But there is no malice at all in the prancing, snorting, piaffe-ing, passage-ing, sudden stop and stare-ing nor the marching band walk and trot. :) I love her and was actually very impressed with her today - she has only just come back under saddle and today flew solo (almost literally) for the first time since early December. She has been out with others but today we went alone. I do love her and feel perfectly happily 'safe' but it probably looks quite 'interesting'!! She did settle after a steep hill and was really pleased with herself. Lots of fuss made of her on return and tomorrow I hope to do raised poles in hand. :)

I had to remind sister that a few times re. you know he isn't going to follow through with anything actual, it's all just bluster.
 
I'm not a Welsh cob owner but I think the advice to laugh at them helps lots of things. I have a very calm ISH (very un-welsh like) who used to be a champion napper.

The way to get him out of a running backwards nap is to relax and laugh at him. He stops, has a think about it and then walk forwards again. The worst thing is to tense up and drive him forward. He's 99% nap proof now. It was patience and a sense of humour that got him there.

Yes, I adore her but struggle to take seriously all that hair and snorting!! Glam Rock in animal form...:cool::D:D So glad I went Welsh. My Arab chap is divine and has much 'smoother' paces but I have lots to improve on with the young one and every time I look at her I smile and look forward to riding. :) Very cheering.

fab description :D Mine has one non tufty foot as it's the one she injured and as the injury was right down at the bottom it had to be shaved really close to scan. It's weird! glad it's growing back and she will be back to full on glam rock again ;)
 
I’m another who’s grinned while reading this. I love my glam rock pony and that he is fundamentally safe, but will have moments that make you laugh (and others roll their eyes!). I think if you can feel safe and laugh you’ll get on just grand with them. I’m totally in love with my boy. Couldn’t imagine having anything less dramatic (or gorgeous) now!
My instructor rolls her eyes at him quite a lot. The trigger phrase for a Moment seems to be ‘that’s looking great’! Gotta laugh.
To be fair, I did spend the first few weeks after getting him wondering what the hell I’d done...then I learnt to laugh and ignore and we turned a corner.

Try tying the rope to a bicycle tyre inner tube. I've used it a lot for horses that never learnt to tie properly as youngsters and have learnt they can break free, and resorted to it when my big horse was about 6-7 when he developed that pretend spooking while tied up habit. He spent a good year being tied to one before I trusted him without again, but it did the trick (he'snot welsh, but has the same sort of personality). They stretch so far before breaking that most horses exhaust all their various party tricks and get bored before they get that far.

Inside every welsh pony is a dragon waiting to come out.
mine is safe as houses, put a toddler on his back and he will look after them, but my god is he a drama queen!
He definitely plays to an audience so we mostly hack alone but get him in the show ring and it can be turned into an asset.
I would never try a prelim test with him, he would get bored and make his own entertainment. Similarly i never argue with him when jumping as he loves it, knows what he is doing and if you try to change his striding gets upset, goes into dragon mode and wholesale jump destruction happens, so its a case of sit tight, steer to the next and he will sort himself out and normally go clear (and fast).

if he has a dragon moment, do NOT fight him, if you fight them thier stubborn streak comes out and they start escalating!
Distract him, laugh at him or simply sit quietly and let him get it out his system.

that said they really are awsome ponys and when you have them onside then they will shift heaven and earth for you!
