Whilst I appreciate you may not want to say on here so PM if you wish but why do people pull a face at the mention of Welton stallions? I'm not considering using any but a friend is...

I too would be very interested in any responses to this as I have Welton Double Cracker and Welton Ambassador on my long list for my TB mare.

Suspect you may get a PM from Shilasdair as she is certainly not a fan

Many people seem to think that Welton's in generally can be quirky/sharp which originally put me off, but having been to see Adonis at home and a couple of times in competition I have to say that he completely stood out from the other stallions I viewed in terms of temperament - he is so laid back he is almost horizontal, but without having lost his sparkle.

I don't mind quirky/sharp, personally think they make better eventers!

Over To You, Minors Frolic, Five Boys, Bonza Katoomba for examples.

PM me if you want, i have a very long story (and a court case) about it if anyone really wants to know. my mare was injured there, they didn't get the vet to look at it even though he was on the yard that day, and they didn't tell me. mare owners worst nightmare tbh.
fwiw, the mare i bred from it (ch 2nd right in my siggie) was amazingly trainable (as a lot of them are) but really not an athlete at all.
friends have bred loads of Weltons (live close to the Barrs) but now use other stallions for just this reason.

And the Rock King's and Fleetwater Opps... all usually mad as hatters!

I like quirky to ride, but as Tills has a few of her own quirks and it'll be my first diddly that I've had right from the word go I thought I'd make life easier for myself and try and choose a stally that might impart a bit of sensibility into the equation!

The other thing I think is that the Barr's are winding down now and do alot less work to publicise their horses in terms of grading etc, thinking that the history and performance should speak for themselves.

My sister rode a lovely little mare by Ambassador. She was so sweet and good natured and had lovely paces. However she was only 15.1hh and she had her dad's jump (not the nicest) but did not have the bravery which he had. She then developed spavins which put an end to her eventing career. However, she was put in foal to Double Cracker and supposedly he is stunning.

I think that its because I've seen so many of them that are real plain janes and are also no athletes.
Welton Double Cracker is by Double Trigger and for some reason people are really very apprehensive about Double Trigger in the racing world.

Adonis is stunning to look at and a super stamp of a horse, but his eventing record is appalling, he couldnt even manage anything more than doing a few pre novices very badly.

There are some super stock by the old welton horses though there is no doubting that.

Off to a good start on his dressage one though

that and the fact that none of the stallions now standing has a good comp record.
and one of them, according to someone i knew very well, who used to ride for them, broke down... they kept that very quiet, obviously.

Haha, used to work for a lady who bred Traks and racing TB's, she used Double Trigger, there is apparently a sign outside his door warning people to be careful, there is a story that once he picked a woman up by his teeth. Not a nice temperment so I've heard. Filly the mare bred has a super temp until weaned, when she beat her little weanling friend up (a Cloudings colt).

Bloody hell!! I think you have all managed to put me off. Shame as I did like the look of them both.

Handy thing this forum!!!

Have you looked at Take It 2 the Limit - he's SF, but quite nice...?

TI2TL and Mill Law are on the list too, it is a seriously long list!!! I really like Primitive Faerie Tale too (he is my current favourite) and the comments about him on the recent post seemed quite positive. I also like Primmore's Pioneer and a couple of the Catherston stallions and Godington Hannibal.

I don't know how I will ever be able to make a decision!

All you can do is go and see the horses, see their progeny, and have a chat with the stallion owners.

I can vouch that Hannibal is a nice horse in all aspects - good conformation, good paces, good looking and and an excellent performance record - he is also passing his athleticism and ability on to his children. His fertility is excellent as well - something which I have heard can be a problem with some of the other mentioned stallions, although I've not used them myself so cannot testify that these rumours are correct. Hannibal's semen is great quality and he is also a gentleman to cover in hand.

My chestnut mare is by Ambassador. She has a temperament to die for, a real sweetie, one of the kindest horses you could ever meet. As for talent, before she injured herself she was a super horse who found everything remarkably easy and took to jumping like a duck to water. She worked from the minute she set foot in the school and was excellent in traffic. She is not quirky but can be sharp and would never be a novice ride. She was never going to be a superstar eventing as she is not, and never will be, fast enough to go further than Novice, but I didnt want that anyway. I actually bought her purely for her temperament.

(Having said that when she injured her back she was dangerous!!!

Maybe I'm just one of the lucky ones!!

I agree with a lot of what has been written here. I have had two Welton eventers, most recent by Ambassador and previous one by Apollo. Both were super, quick and scopey. However they were also sharp, spooky and this caught us out over some bigger tracks. In terms of temperaments they were too die for, although I would put them at the quirkier end of thorougbreds. Dont be put off, there are some super ones still out there and I would certainly buy again.
