Wet Food Recommendations

So, Sonny had to have an operation yesterday to remove crystals in his bladder. Vet says they’re most likely caused by his diet - he’s on raw turkey mince and a salmon & rice kibble that was recommended by his breeder.

Vet has suggested changing the raw food for a wet food but the market is so vast we don’t know what is best.

We have bought a few tins of pedigree as suggested by our vet to tide us over while we research what would be best for him going forward.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Put the pedigree in the bin - get some Forthglade, Naturediet, Skinners wet, Denes, or Arden Grange sensitive! Autarky have brought out a decent wet too. I have just taken my lad off RAW as he simply cannot keep weight on and it's so very expensive now!

If he was eating turkey and salmon mainly with rice, out of all various meats/organs and fish, those are relative low in purines. Most other meat/organ/fish foods have higher forms of purines in them.

Here’s a purine food list you might find useful:

There’s various types of kidneys crystals and they may not be uric acid crystals but calcium oxalate crystals. Getting them analysed can help aid the imbalance in diet. If they’re calcium based, it may be a vit D deficiency, as vit D is essential to absorb intestinal calcium, without which could cause kidney issues. Im speculating possibilities here, more analysis would be needed to pinpoint the imbalance. I wouldnt be too hasty in assuming theyre uric acid/purine rich food caused crystals, due to the info youve stated about his diet.

I switched off grains for my dogs and cats and they really are thriving. I would feed more raw if i had a freezer, but have found Rocco from zooplus a good selection of various cooked real meats, without grains. They do some millet and rice ones but they also do just meat mixes. Various meat and organ mixes and fish, so theyre getting a wide variety of red/white/fish.

Youre vet is probably assuming purines and advising using saitan/grain based off the shelf feeds as they are lower in real meat. If it is confirmed uric acid/purines, especially from a low purine salmon and turkey diet, thats a good call, but id never suggest saitan (gluten lumps) to feed any animal tbh! I’d keep feeding good low-purine meats but adding more veg and rice. I’d reduce the current ratio/volume of meat to more rice/veg, without eliminating excellent nutrition from meat.

First step id take is get those kidney crystals analysed to know what theyre made up of. That gives a huge amount of info on how to proceed with diet change.
