Wet weather + what to do re rugs

Well it's been raining now for about five hours and our horses are out without rugs, they have got a nice big tree to shelter under though. What do we do, leave them? or put their lightweights on while they're wet even though i've always been told not to do this and lightweights always leak anyway! Both horses live out 24/7. I know when i go up they'll both prob be a little shaky but will be in middle of field grazing xx
 
Tb x has a rain sheet on as he gets the shakes in wet weather, plus its very windy; other two cob and shettie never have rugs on and are always grazing no matter what!
They will come in overnight tho to dry off. I miss mucking out ( how sad is that)!
 


Although mine is a wimp in Winter & needs to be rugged, she doesn't mind showers so she's out naked. As long as it's only summer rain & not gale force winds & sleet then I'll leave her out unrugged. She has hedges & trees for shelter so it's not like she has nowhere to get out of the rain.

She's an NF though so not so sensitive as some TB's/Arabs etc.
 
Adrian the young ISH had his summer turnout on last night & still has it on. He was happily grazing down the field the last time I looked.

Jenny the ancient mare didn't have anything on last night as she's very fluffy from Cushings & gets too warm, but this am I put her rambo on because she was slightly chilly & she's 35. She's alternating between grazing & standing next to the field shelter. (Why won't she go IN it???)
 
Mine are all in medium weights at night and I have left them on today as it is quite cold, rainy and windy (even though they have field shelters) they are not hot underneath.

B is in at night and out in the day but everything on the yard has stayed in today and even the ones living out have come in shivering. It has chucked it down all night and was really heavy this morning, We are right on top of a hill and the fields are quite exposed. B's paddock was under water this morning so not really a choice to turn him out and he does tend to go nuts if its wet and windy and has turned himself over more than once in the field, last time he hurt his back muscles and was off for weeks!
 
I am so kind compared to all of you.
My TB, and my Shire x TB are both in high neck HWs.
My Warmblood girl is in a full neck MW.
And even then, I was considering going to visit them just now to check they're not cold.

Once a horse has managed 2 nights with no rugs they do not go back on again.

Mine would be sweating terribly if he had a rug on now. He wouldn't thank me for it either.

Are you serious? Mine are unrugged and have been for the past 2months or so, they were happily cantering around the field this morning, cant imagine rugging them in heavy weights, they would be collapsed with heat exhaustion, its wet but its still warm, i was doing the poo picking in a t-shirt this morning at 8am.

Up until last night, my two youngsters have been naked, and my old TB in a rain sheet or fly sheet depending on the weather.
It's probably normal weather in Notts, but here in GLos, it's been raining heavily (the sort that soaks you through your waterproofs) since 5am without pause...and at the moment I'm wondering if I'll be able to get back to the yard for the flooding on the roads.
It's pretty cold and breezy too...

Oh, that makes more sense. Natives should be nude, and out on rough grazing where possible.
Mine live out 24/7 too...but as they're not natives I do have to rug them a bit.
Not usually this much in May though

Not for my babies! My veteran would be a hat rack on rough grazing and i dont think the baby would be to impressed either. They are both a healthy weight on the good grazing so i dont worry about it, will help the baby grow to a good hieght too. Hes 13.1hh atm as a 2yo so hoping he will make 14hh. What ya think?

Mine are naked and it has poured down since last night. They have a shelter they won't go in, in the rain and a big tree, they won't stand under. Their choice.
Both are cobs that haven't been rugged for months.
 
My mare is out in her m/w rug and was in last night and will be in tonight with a m/w stable rug on

She has been living out 24/7 the past couple off weeks but the rain last night was really heavy and it was very windy its ment to be the same tonight too

Her field is very open with hardley anywhere for her to get out of the wind and rain so I dont mind bringing her in

D was out last night in a l/w amigo and was soaked through this morning (and recently reproofed), he was thrilled to come in for his breakfast and have warm pjs on

(I know this as he didnt bite me while I changed rugs!). He's going out again now in a l/w for a few hours but back in tonight as hopefully Borde Hill tomorrow.
 
Where in Surrey are you Berry? I'm in Surrey as well he was out last night with nothing on and was ok this morning, came in at 8.30 and I left him in to dry off with his stable chaps on then rode him, now he's out with nothing on but its quite warm now. He'll be out tonight unless it starts pouring but I think I'll put his lightweight on. He's a 7 y/o ISH and doesn't really feel the cold too badly.
 
My TB is out 24/7 and no rug. The weather here is quite mild and the rain hasn't started yet. However it would have to be really bad for me to put a rug on him now. The field has a few trees and good hedging most of the way round, plenty of natural shelter. he doesn't shiver when he's wet and is very hardy for a TB and a good weight. He's more likely to to sweat with a rug now.

Well believe me, it is heavy rain and wind here where I am.
I don't feel I should have to explain myself to you about what rugs my horses are wearing but one is an 18 year old TB the other a 7 year old out of training TB and the other is a TB x
I was outside 2 days ago in a tee shirt and my horses were naked. Today, I have a fleece and a coat on outside as the weather has changed again and my horses have MW turnouts on, they are not sweating and their coats are beautiful. I am not looking at growing any coats on my horses this time of year either and if this is classed as molly coddling then yes, hands up I'm guilty. I would class it more as adapting to suit the weather.
I do hope that for the rest of the summer you will not be requiring any additional clothing than a tee shirt - besides - it is summer you know
