What’s the going price for a lab

Black Labs are usually less than the other colours. I saw a working bred, health tested & hip scored parents at a reduced price of £550. It was 12 weeks & fully vaccinated. The original price had been around £1000

I was tempted but decided the timing was wrong and that I wanted something smaller. I ended up with a Whippet😈

I can't justify this, but if anyone had tried to haggle and knock me down in price for a pup they would have been shown the door. I suspect most breeders would be the same.

I would generally agree for a litter not ready to go, or only just ready to go.

That said, if I saw a litter which were 12 weeks, having already been reduced, then I would probably try my luck to knock a little more off.

On thea subject of older, reduced price puppies.

How old is too old?

I got my GSD at 4 months old. I have home bred most of my shepherds so taking on an older one was quite different. Luckily I knew the breeder and that she had put a lot of time into the pup, socialising, house training etc. From the first night she came home she settled in her crate and we have never had an accident in the house, but it is very much a case of having the right breeder with an older pup. I know some would have had the pup just in a kennel with others with no socialisation or attempt to house train and that would have been much harder work, though I probably would have considered it if the actual pup ticked all my other boxes breeding and health test wise.

I like Hector actually.

I have to go to work in a bit, not for long, a few hours.
Would you pop him in the crate with some toys? It’s too warm to take any of them today. I don’t want them running round a yard for two hours.
Also not confident on leaving all together just yet.
Definitely crate him.

I would definitely crate him.
As for 'how old is too old?' for a pup. It depends so much on what has been done with the pup before you get it. Our '2nd hand' brown Lab pup has been harder work than any pups straight from the breeder but also harder work than the 5 month old Rottweiler pup that we actually took on f/t aged 7 maths, after a friend literally rescued her from a bad start and visited us with her for 2 months before needing to leave her.
Our brown one is so enthusiastic about everything we do for/with her that she needs to be kept calm, even telling her she is good gets an over enthusiastic response. I really don't think the previous owner, who found her to be too much, had done anything sensible with her over the 3 months that she had had her.
I like Albert/Bert/Bertie for his name. He is gorgeous!

I know it’s very different as he was a special case but I had Dougal at 5 months, he was the easiest to house train that I’ve ever had, even having lived in kennels and picked everything up literally instantly. If he’d been able bodied his trainability and desire to please was second to none.
If great nephew Bertie is half the same I’ll be very happy!

I’m better! I found Immodium, no idea why we had that (or how old it was 😂)
Anyway, one super cute puppy later and we are home.
Cecil has requested I return his new brother asap. Hes a bit cross!
They have all met and seem to be getting on nicely
Cecil is chuntering away under his breath but he is a chatty dog anyway
Blimey, you don’t hang about! 🤣
A mini nag… but I’m neurotic… watch that slippy floor!
He’s absolutely gorgeous.
Name?
We covered our kitchen floor in mats for the first year 🙈 The lounge still has 2 long runners on the tiles.
No name.
I will do, it’s actually pretty non slip. Quite textured

Name wise, I love old fashioned names, I’d anyone has any ideas
Is it lvt like ours? Absolute swine to clean, especially in winter. We chose it for the non-slip factor for the dogs, totally regret it. We finally have a reasonable machine, takes a while but does get it clean.

My floor is amtico and I got it for its non slip feature but agree it’s a pain to get absolutely clean on the areas that get used a lot. I end up on hands and knees and a scrubb8ng brush every so often but mostly use a spray mop thingy for a quick clean..

Congrats on the pup.

Have to say I agree on the haggling - as a breeder, if the price was quibbled I would firmly show someone the door. Saying that, our litters tend to be pre-sold (no money exchanged, but pups spoken for). The current litter had a "spare" as there was one more than I scanned her for or I saw on xray. It was sold/allocated within a week through the wait list.

That’s why I’ve never actually done it. It was worth it for Scout as all I wanted was a pup of approximately his age and breeding and there were other people I could call.
Also if there’s an asking price then that’s what I’d expect to pay. I thought OP didn’t know a price and was going in blind.

Oh gosh, I could never do it face to face. It would make me squirm..

More if I saw an add for older puppies that they were clearly struggling to shift, I would pop an email across just detailing the sort of home I had to offer and an explanation of why I was only happy to offer X amount.

They can only say no 🤷‍♀️

I wouldn't have the balls to have the conversation face to face. I'm a wimp.
