My friend and I set out on a lovely hack this morning in the sun shine. Her horse was for some reason on her toes more than usual to start with but as we got maybe a quarter of the way out, if that, she decided to plant herself. It didn't matter what my friend tried, she could not get her going, I even walked off with out them a little way but her horse didn't want to know. After persevering for a little while with no luck, the horse decided to rear up vertical and go over on top of my friend! She shouted that she was ok and the next thing I knew we were off! Her horse had bolted and mine being youngish and green of course was going with her! We were flat out along a side road going too fast to try and circle in such a small space, I thought about turning into someone's drive way but thought it would end badly! Luckily there was a bend before the main road and as my friends horse turned the bend, mine seemed to notice I was on board and slowed enough for me to the circle her and stop to jump off! I had my friend on the ground in one direction and her horse somewhere on the main road in the other! I decided that seeing as my friend had shouted she was ok, the best thing to do was to find the horse before it caused an accident. I got to the main road and saw a lady from the yard looking for us. She said the horse had ran straight home and was absolutely fine and then she drove to find my friend.

When I had jumped off tink there were a couple of people outside their houses who had witnessed the bolting horses, I did ask for help but the only one who was willing was a man in a wheelchair! No one else even responded! I know it was a situation that people without horse experience wouldn't want to get involved in but to not even respond was just rude.

After we were all back at the yard, the horses we fine and taken care of by the YO so I took my friend to the hospital for a check up, she is luckily just badly bruised!

What a morning!!!

Now to figure out what is up with my friends horse!

Gosh what a frightening morning! Glad you and your friend and the horses are all fine. It's really one of my worst nightmares put hacking :(

It is astonishing that no one helped you, but if there were a few people maybe it was the classic 'bystander' effect - where a crowd of people do not intervene in a situation as every individual thinks that someone else will step up? Either that or they just didnt know what to do help?

It's horrible, thankfully everyone is fine and hopefully no long term damage done x

That sounds absolutely terrifying, glad that it ended OK!

I hope you are never in the situation again but if you are please go back to the rider first. I know she said she was OK but that is everyone's reaction to an accident and not necessarily the reality.

It must be a day for it, my friends two horses got away from her today out on a hack and galloped off towards home

It was very frightening, I am actually very pleased with myself for staying as calm as I did the whole time! I'm usually a nervous reck! :o

But yes the most important thing is that all of us ok! Lucky escape I think!

oh crikey - total nightmare situation, thank goodness everyone is ok.

agree about the bystander effect!

I hope you both manage to move on from the fright! also hope you find an explanation for the odd behaviour x

Yes I probably should of gone back but I was so worried the horse would cause a car accident!

That's so scary thank god you were all ok, I think in those moments we make decisions in a split second with no time to think things through, but well done for managing to stop it doesn't bear thinking about what could've happened.

I have heard of horses refusing to move forward and later it has been discovered there is a live wire either on the surface or near to the surface of the road. If it is a behaviour which is completely out of the norm, to be honest, I would give the horse the benefit of the doubt and give that bit of the road/path etc, a wide berth. Very glad all were ok!

omg if this was written 12 yrs ago I would think you were my friend and was writing about me!

I had a very similar accident years ago, my horse trampled on me, but luckily it was on a bridleway, as I fell off my friend chased my horse, with her 4yr old but it made everything worse, my horse galloped off for about 5 miles down country lanes, almost getting run over, so the guy turned around and chased her, she got almost to the main a road and there was a yard just before, luckily the owner was pulling out, so he blocked the road, caught my horse a put her out in the field! the guy who almost hit her, blocked the road from the opposite direction, then came back to get me!

was the scariest thing ever!! so I don't know how horrible it must be to be in your position? go after the horse or stay with the rider! glad all is well now!

I will bare that in mind, we had just done the same ride a couple of days prior tho. My friend hasn't had her long and she is on loan so is going to talk to the owner and see if she has had this problem before. If it continues she might give her back as she is not an easy ride anyway, can't canter her other wise she tanks off. We think that is due to her always being a team chase horse though.
