and what can you recommend (or recommend to avoid)? Just looking for ideas as I quickly discovered how crappy the tennis balls are that pet stores sell! I just bought some used, 'proper' ones off Ebay, but wondered what you all have and are there any that are really good value for money.

Tink has a squeaky fox which she adores! She goes from snuggling it in bed to chucking it around the garden and trying to savage it. I think being a terrier she likes the squeaking as she likes murdering small mammals. :o She's never been a "fetch" dog so wasn't interested in balls or anything.

Dougal had a multicoloured rubber bone with knobbly rubber rings on it which he loved to chew/chase although he did eventually chew it to bits it lasted about 2 years!

Anything that squeaks or roughly resembles a ball. Failing that a bit of cloth for tug of war :D. If you want a good strong squeaky tennis ball Kong do them, even the proper tennis balls don't last more than a week with the terrier  I prefer giving them stuffing free toys only because I hate picking up all the fluff after its been gutted :)

Plantpots! :D :D

And anything that squeaks

Brighteyes, if you want used tennis balls, let me know. My mother's club regularly has old ones to throw out that we hand out to doggie friends at the park :)

My great weiler has a big orange squeaky ball (with a dead squeak) that he has had since a puppy, so nine years now. He has never been destructive, and never plays with anything else.

Mine dont get toys :p
If it burns some energy they can have it on walks other wise "nada":D

So rufus "little ginger ninja" has a kong frisby, very hardy, durable non destructive rubber frisby, I have a ball thrower but dont use tennis balls I use light weight ruber balls that fit just right and cannot be bust and they go for miles, and there is a few balls in the garden.

I will try and find balls I use ;) I google and find the name, they are fab.

my collie adores tennis balls more than anything! she'd happily play for 24hrs a day with one and not get bored!

my samoyed is unlike any other I've had before him, he GETS the idea of toys and loves them! he has several tuggy toes, rubber squeaky things and chews but by far his fave is a small stuffed cow toy thing - he takes it everywhere!

Empty rinsed juice cartons, (with the plastic pouring bit cut off), for your basic shredding needs. Also see: a sheet of newspaper scrumpled up very slowly (apparently its more fun that way).
Top toy is a mini squeaky space hopper, from Pets at Home. Its soft enough that the squeak it quite hard to get to and kill. He seems to enjoy running up and down whacking it on anything so it squeaks - walls, sofa, his own head. Usually when I really need to concentrate on uni work!

bought a red rubber ball on a rope years ago for the ferrets and its still going strong, minus rope, with our JRT.He adores it but it survives, he also recently was given a jumbone, he has had the innards out but it still plods on- his favourite game is bringing in big rocks and dropping it wherever, could be on ones feet, hes not fussy!!Hes only 10 so he'll grow up one day.

Ball on a rope. In fact, two balls on ropes - you only get the second one, when you bring the first one back :D
But mostly for training and reward, they don't really have constant access to toys.
The Airkong baton on a rope (made of tennis ball material) is good too or a rope raggie.

Millie is obsessed with rubber chickens, she's been through loads over the years!!!

I seem to have aquired a 'fetchaholic' and mucking out is punctuated every ten seconds by the arrival of the tennis ball I just chucked. They last about a week.

For dedicated sessions I use 'tinkly ball' (don't laugh, she knows exactly which one this is...)

I tie a rubber and cloth gardening glove onto the end of the lunge whip for a very silly game and have a Kong treat thing to stuff a few nibbles in when I shut in her 'long wait' pen.

Add to that a small frisbee and a VERY squeaky latex spikey ball I use for very special moments (mainly because my ears will die) and that's it. She only has them when we out exercising or having a dedicated play session in the sand school.

Puppy thank you for the offer - very kind (and 'plantpots' ???)

CAYLA please do get pics :)

I love the rubber chicken. It has a very tragic but at the same time hysterically funny demeanour - and is probably as big as Penny herself.

katielou love the plush 'ethical' toy and thanks for the links.

Anything with a squeak, although they don't last more than a few hours!

Current favourites are my jod boots and the ever-popular run upstairs, find, steal and show off that you have it-the nearest sock.

Brig's favourite is the treat ball cos it has food: he must bring a toy when we come down in the morning, absolutely anything will do, including another dog's leg, obviously still attached.

Katie, I just ordered 3 stag bar things! I'm dying to see what they make of them. I nearly wet myself at someone on another forum claiming she wouldn't use them in case of anthrax!

"This looks too nice to be a favourite - is it a new one or just very carefully 'loved'?"

It had just been through the washing machine, as it gets sucked quite a lot and goes crispy and a bit smelly !! Ugh. But he has got a matching monkey.

Mine loves anything that squeaks but she will destroy most squeaks within about a minute so it's a challenge to find a toy that lasts a while noise wise (she still loves them after the squeak's died mind!) She has a toy box and will regularly get out 3 or 4 of her favourite for that day. You just have to say to her to fetch a toy and off she goes and chooses from her many! Basically she gets them replaced at xmas - this year she's done well - sister got her a big pink squeaky flamingo, I got her a squeaky snowman come rope toy (Morrisons) and sister also got her a racoon that you put an empty plastic bottle in so it makes a lovely crunchy noise!

I don't think my dog's fussed really, as long as she can chew it, chase it and roll down the garden with it in her mouth she's happy! I also found her some football type balls that had 'escaped' from the local primary school - she loves them as well!!!

Clover Pups favorite past time at the moment is removing carrots from the bag in the feed room and taking them into haybarn and stacking them up..He is also partial to a tenis ball, an empty loo-roll(they ping away when he jumps on them), Dads socks and his ultimate favorite play thing.....My brothers Cat Ted :D (poor ted is not keen on this idea) :D

Poodle has a distinct liking for things that he can:
eviscerate and leave a trail of the entrails
shred
and then throw the wee bitty shreds about and play with by tossing in the air, and then catching again. Methinks he was an orca in a previous life

Border Terrorist has a liking for things that
he can chase and then play tuggy with and leave your arms dangling from sockets lamely

MinPin doesn't play much but I did actually nearly pee myself the other day watching her trying to bite the end of Poodle's tail (which has been shaved down) as it was wafting in front of her nose at "treat time".

The cats! He thinks they're brilliant fun, and just doesn't seem to get it that when they swipe at his face they're not actually trying to play with him!

Other than that, he is mega-destructive, so doesn't get anything soft and fluffy, his favourites are tennis balls (but he can't be left alone with them or he pulls off the fluffy covering and eats it) and knotted ropes/rope balls. He is very good at fetch, and loves to play tug.

Plant pots are a big favourite here too, even big ones with plants in get carried down the garden and chewed up.
Nearly all toys get eaten, the only thing that has lasted is an 'invincible chain'
