What can an adult do with a welsh A?

I had the pleasure of spending some time with a welsh a youngster who I really fell in love with, can anyone suggest anything I could do with him - or would he just be an overgrown pet if I bought him?

You could show him in hand or break him in to drive, or get a good kid on him and show under saddle. They can be fun.
 
My mum has a welsh A and he was driven and showen in hand. He is retired now as he's 29, and we have had him since a 4 year old, so I used to ride him as a kid as well.

My mum even did x country driving with him, he loved it... great fun
 
As spudlet said.....unless you are very short and very light in which case....gymkhanas :-) if you have got a speedy one they are immense fun! i would do anything to relive gymkhana days on a Sec A!!
 
spend lots of money on pretty accessories, a fortune on feed and rugs and livery and keep them colts so that you can show them under saddle!! At least that is what Sami tells me about why our 3 A's are pampered and 2 of them still bloody colts!

You can show in hand, find a little jockey and produce to lead rein/first ridden, drive or just enjoy as a pet.
 
Not very short or light!! About 5'7 and 10stone - maybe more (its been a good spring! :D)

Would he need to be registered? He's grey, whiter face, dapply body black knees and one wall eye which I believe affects showing?
 
Maybe I'll buy him then, he can stay at my friends farm for almost free til he's ready to be broken and then I can maybe find a nice little girl to loan him.

I'm assuming he's unbroken just because of the way he looked, but he was the only one who let me near him and let me put my dog lead on his head and lead him round(loong story!)
 
If you wanted to show him, as a Welsh A he'd need to be reg (unless at an unaff class where schedule has an unreg class) and I'm afriad the wall eye would be a bug no no.

But driving would be fun!
 
A bug no no :p? I know what you mean. So driving it is then? TBH I'd really like to let him out on loan to some nice little nippers to enjoy, that way I can keep an eye on him but someone less priveliged will get to enjoy him. I remember the days I had no pony and nice people let me ride theirs :D

No reason you couldn't break him to ride and drive, then you get the best of both worlds:)
 
If you did have a child (or any other poor small unsuspecting victim close to hand!!) you could do as you say, break him,then you could let them ride him for you and work with you, you could then go on to do lead rein classes, let the child/small unsuspecting victim do ridden classes and also you could show him in hand. This would give the pony an good allround education.
If you had someone small enough to ride him that maybe cant afford/is unable to have their own pony you would be giving them an amazing opportunity and also you would be able to have the pony and bond with it. It could be a really nice, fun and very rewarding project.
Then you could maybe go on and loan the pony out etc or teach it to drive!

Thats a really nice idea.....i grew up riding lots of other ponies for people as i didnt have my own untill i was 12.
Including a GORGEOUS section a! I was so gratefull to all of the people that let me ride for them.

All i will say if you decide to loan out is, welsh A's need adult supervision!!
their beauty hides a strong personality, and can easily turn into a bomb on legs:D
 
I was looking for some pictures of Sec A's being driven, and saw some really young ones advertised as broken (rising 3). That can't be right, can it? I don't know much about driving but if they were ridden ponies I would say they are too young really. Is it the same for driving?:(
 
driving :D get one to match and you could do scurries - the fast driving ;) :D

also, how about a companion as well? :D life of reiley ;)

Definately.....they are very much strong personalities.....i loved the one that i used to ride....but it was like the greyhound of the pony world when it got going....although perhaps less gracefull :D
Good for gymkhana races though :D:D:D:D
 
Also, as someone has mentioned, I get to buy him cute pony sweetie things!!! Pink and flowery!!! OMG, guys I'm going to take some photos of him tonight and speak to the owners (conveniently my friends/ family :D about buying him)
