what can i do to stop this?

i have a sharer for my TB and she's generally brilliant and really helps me out with doing jobs and stuff in return for riding whenever she wants. anyway, she did the horses last night and i've just been up this morning to turn them out and my TB has 3 shoes on!!! now i know she's ridden him because she text me last night so she's either ridden him with 3 shoes or its come off on the ride and she's not realised....

now this is a very 'footy' horse and he's hobbling this morning (very footsore when lost a front shoe)- it wouldn't be too bad but this is the third time this has happened since may. now i realise this horse does pull shoes for fun but i'm worried that if she's not chekcing something like this/doesn't notice it that she might miss something more major?!! how can i get her to check properly? last time i said "please pick out his feet when you have brought him in/ridden just to double check" but clearly thats not worked.....

i'm really quite annoyed as its so obvious when its happened and what if i go away for a week?!!

There is no easy way through this one. She has totally lost your trust. Surely she would have picked the horses feet out before riding! I think you are going to have to have a huge heart to heart with her about this one.
 
cant u stress that him losing a shoe and being ridden could make him permanently lame? surely if he lost it riding she would of noticed just tell her if she neglects to check feet before and after riding you may be forced to let her go as your horses welfare is at risk explain why she needs to do checks on horse in full hope she sorts her self out
 
Just tell her your concerns, mention that when he looses a shoe he gets really footy and will be lame for days etc etc, thats it's vital and very important that he's not ridden when there are any signs that the shoe is starting to come loose, and to make sure before and after she'd rode that the shoes are ok, besides its in her best interests, she can't ride a lame horse! so you'd think she'd make sure of these things herself.

I'm sure you'll feel better once you have had a good talk to her about it.

agree with kenzo here. maybe make a slightly TOO big a deal of it. say he's lame, make a song and dance about getting the farrier out, and say he's unridable for a while so she misses out.

but also, have a good talk to her. not confrontational, but say you're concerned about why the horse keeps losing shoes, and together form a 'plan' which consists of checking each shoe before and after riding. giving it a little wiggle... or something?
 
Perhaps she's a bit novice-y when looking after horses and needs you to show her how to check shoes? It could be she's not looking for the right things before going out so maybe take her through the signs of loose shoes and what to listen / feel for when riding. Then highlight the importance of checking when she gets back!

If that fails then you need to take a firmer course, but I'd go for education first.

Personally I had the opposite problem when sharing - I had to hassle the owner to get the horse shod as his shoes were almost hanging off...
 
ha so tuns out shoe is in stable!! cue me feeling rather guilty for thinking bad things...fortunately i hadn't said anything apart from that she needed to ring farrier and get him to come up...i DO feel guilty but then it HAS happened twice in the past few months (riding without the shoe) so thats why i jumped to conclusions....although i know this doesn't excuse it.....do feel bad though....
