He'll be too young to start schooling yet.

Babies have the attention span of a goldfish. Your best off trying to bombproof him by getting him used to dogs, umbrellas, cyclists and motorbikes etc, and loading. Basic stuff that doesn't take too long and that can be treated like a game.

You can teach him to be tied up (involves passing a long rope from his headcollar through a tie up ring to you holding it - stops them pulling back and ripping ropes), take him for walks to explore "scary" things, and realise that they are safe (flappy plastic is a good one), teach him to be plaited and trimmed, teach them to trot in hand, explore trotting poles.... lots and lots of stuff! As for the not liking being alone, he is a baby, the more he goes away from the heard and does fun things like exploring in hand the better, he will get used to being alone and when he has to be left he will get used to it, can you give him anything to distract from the others leaving?

he ties up great so long as his mate is in the stable if the other horse is in the field he dances around pulling on rope and shouting to him. will introduce some more scary things with him cant teach to load as we have no box i have tried feeding him just b4 his friend goes out to try and distract him that doesnt work iv tried being with him that doesnt work he is fine if i put him in the field on his own but goes mental if he sees his friend going away its very strange lol. he could defenetly do with more road work as hes still pretty jumpy not at cars but sheep lol

Break him to drive. Gives him something to do, he earns his keep, you can do more road work without having to get off your backside. Win win situation...

Then go on "sheep hunts" i have had/worked with quite a lot of young stock and what I found was Find what it is that they are a bit scared of and make that the challenge to bond you and horse, My one now is not a fan of flappy plastic, so we go on plastic hunts, she now seeks it out. I dont force her to go and see the plastic, I go over and am interested in it and she eventually follows as curiosity takes over!

At 9 months old you just teach him the basics and let him be the baby he is, yes he will yell a little when his friend does other things, as someone else has said his mental span is short, so just keep picking out his feet, grooming and taking him out for SHORT walks.

Well she's already thinking about long reining so will be broken in before 2 yrs. I'm sorry but anybody in my mind who can even think about if you can long rein a 9 month old shouldn't have a foal. Madness total madness

he will not be backed at 2 yrs old he will be well formed before he is backed i was looking for advise hence why i asked what i could do with a 9 month old didnt mention when he could be backed.

I have him booked into be gelded in march as my vet will not do it before as its to cold but aas soon as warmer weather comes that will be at the top of my list lol not that he is coltish in anyway but i have no plans to breed from him so may as well get him done.
sheep hunting can defenetly be done as we live on a farm so plenty of scary white fluffy sheep to find lol
is there a mental reason why people choose to turnaway after being broken.

Well my 10 month old colt will be done in Feb, as vets like to geld them when it's cold as no FLIES, not when it's starting to warm up.

^^^^^ This exactly. My colt was done in Feb last year when he was 5 1/2 months old. If OP's vet has really said it's too cold I would be changing vets tbh!

I have a nine month old colt as well.
His my first baby - I found Richard Maxwells books - from Birth to Backing and Training Young Horses really good. It tells you want you can do each month/year.
My boy does everything now - ties, leads in and out in company or alone, puddles, gates, steps back when I enter the stable, grooms and sprays, hose feet, farrier, rugs, walk up lane, dogs and kids, trailer and horse box ramps, clippers, touch his ears and mouth. He walks and trots round the school with me, poles and different objects. I would like to try join up with him. His even wore a bridle so I can show him this season.
When we first got him he was free jumped over a small fence to see if he had a jump but haven't done this since.
He use to try jump out his box but we just closed the top door. In the field he calls when on his own but soon relaxes.

Kylee you are trying to do too much too fast with your baby.
Turn him out in the field and visit to check on him but let him grow up for several months yet, really he will just sour and learn all the wrong things, he is like a toddler in human terms!!
If you are desperate to do more sell him and buy a 4 yo you can do everything with to start it off.

Of course your suggestion was very good JFTD but it is perfectly clear that kylee86 doesn't want to add value to her colt, she wants to break him (in more ways than one).

I'm not sure having a 9 month old drag a person around in a trap would add value  I thought it might appeal :p
