I keep my 2 youngsters one a piece of land we have. They have a field shelter with a stable attached to it. Currently use the stable for storage, but can't get the massive bales of hay I buy through the door! What can I buy just to use for hay storage? Don't want to spend a fortune and nor do I need to worry about planning permission (it won't be granted!)
 
Google 'container sales' and you'll find loads BUT you may need PP. If you use tarpaulin, put the bales on pallets and then put something on top of the bales (eg more pallets or tyres) to allow the air to circulate.

As has been suggested, your best bet is probably to use the field shelter for storage, again, putting pallets on the floor, and the stable as a shelter.
 
You could do what I sometimes have to do if the large round bales won't fit through the door, (you have to be feeling energetic though!) Cut the twine/netting and remove several layers and then roll it in. :)
 
we once tried to force a round bale into the stable door (force aka drive into it) it got well and truly wedged!

Phone call to the parentals and Dad spent the rest of his afternoon with his sleeves rolled up and a hacksaw (?- the ones you use with your hand with all the teeth) cutting the blooming thing into pieces to set it free!

Not a happy daddy! Who insisted on supervising hay deliveries from then on
 
Bales are large (very large!) heston bales, so can't get covers for them, nor will they fit in a trailer

If PP is needed for a container then that is a no go as well :(

Only issue I have with using the shelter for storage is that I'd then have to block it off to stop horses getting in and eating all the hay - only way to stop them getting to the grub is to totally close it away so would mean fully closing off the shelter some how. Bales are so large that a gate on the front would still mean they could reach over and eat unless I only had 1 bale which sort of defeats the object of being able to store.
 
i built my own shed for hay using a couple of old garden sheds (2 6x4's built a lovley 12x8), so if you were to back onto you existing stable you could build a shelter for the hay the size you want.
i used a post whacker to knock upright posts in & screwed the panels onto them for extra strength, you could use a couple of gate hinges & make the door one whole panel.
 
Second Pallets right off the ground probably double layer and catch the tarpaulin in it...I tarp my hay and its in a barn as well!!

The shelter where I store hay is open at the front, I made a gate from pallets fastened together and then electric fenced round it until I used sufficient hay that they couldn't reach it. The sheep were a bit more determined and managed to limbo through the fence until I got a few more strands up!
 
We used to roll our big bales into a field shelter. We had pallets for flooring with rubber field mats over the top. We put taup over the door, held down with stones at the bottom, which allowed air to circulate and stopped weather. We had a small elec fence around the exterior. Worked wonderfully.
